Can a deck still be undefeated when it's second place?

The deck's idea is simple. Reduce reserve and economy to minimize the opposing board state while maintaining a solid presence via saves and Flea Bottom. Being able to push through unopposed as the second player with Flea Bottom is nice, too, with Salt Wife and Wildling Scout.

The event had 10 participants, reduced to 8 with two players dropping. 3 rounds, in all.

Round 1. Vs Tyrell Summer. Yay. Exactly what a winter deck wants to face.

Had to mulligan 2x Moat Cailin. Went up against an early QoT, Brienne, 3 reducers and KoF. My board was less impressive with a Lordsport Shipwright(claim), Salt Wife, Silence's Crew, and Black Wind's Crew. But, I had Flea Bottom Sacrificed Salt Wife and survived turn one. Turn 2 Valar. Turn 3 Barring the Gates to prevent QoT from coming back with my opponent's Ghosts of Harrenhal. They get Randy, Knight of the Reach, and core Marge. I get more Silence's Crew, BW's Crew, and Victarion. It's a slow back and forth. Randy is doing work. Reach Knight is giving power to Margaery. Victarion is gaining power and kneeling Margaery. I FB in another BW's Crew near the end to prevent an unopposed from Reach Knight. Game goes to time. We're tied on power, but I get the modified win from having a larger draw deck.....yay pillage.

Round 2 vs NW Summer Builders. I begin to think that despite bringing three different decks...everyone knew I was going to run Winter.

I set up with Esgred, Seatower and some garbage. It's a bit hard to trigger Iron Market when Winter's not reducing reserve worth a hoot. My opponent gets his builders moving immediately. He plays milk on Esgred. I play Fishwhiskers. He draws nothing to write home about. More Flea Bottom from me and a Victarion I stealth and intimidate through unopposeds and win.

Round 3 Vs Greyjoy Rains. I wish I could remember exactly how the game went, but there were two Valar turns in a row (Esgred survived one of them). We each play Euron. I'm lucky enough to have a Priest of the Drowned God out along with a military chud, which keeps me ahead of the Crow's Eye. Winter and Moat Cailin wreck his hand for a couple of rounds and Iron Islands Market finally starts producing two gold. From there I outpace with renown, unopposed, and close with Winter Festival. Most exciting match up I've had in a long time.

Yay 2nd place. 1st place was Targ Winter.

Were you satisfied with the Wives? I think they're a lot more interesting than people give them credit for, especially in accordance with Flea Bottom.

Salt Wives put in some work for me. The only reason I'm not running 3/1 SW/WS is for the icon spread. The only downside of repeatable Flea Bottom targets is that it's easy to forget the one offs in discard and occasionally misplay. I'd run Salt Wife in GJ Winter even without Flea Bottom.

Yeah, I like to have a couple in my GJ Winter deck too. In the double claim turns they have the potential to make all the difference. And if they draw the odd Treachery on them, all the better. My serious threats will do their thing unmolested. Gratz on your showing, anyway. How do the Crew and the Moat perform for you? Not only in your tournament, since you've already mentioned that, but during your playtesting too. Not entirely sold on the latter. Wraiths and the Agenda with the occasional help by Alannys are usually enough for me. More Reserve choke seems like overkill. Not to mention that a 2-cost location that may or may not go off during each turn is a serious tempo hit in a deck that wants to apply pressure right from the start.

Silence's Crew has a lot of what I like in a 4 cost character; Two icons, No Attachments, Big body, and non unique status. I'm rarely going to invest in bestow, but there's usually a 25%+ chance of triggering the reaction. Moat Cailin is fine for me. If I weren't running 6 winter plots and Valar, I might opt for Pyke. It's as much for the initiative hit as it is for reserve. Optimally, I'll set up with it as I think it sets a nice tone. If I don't think I can maximize from it(vs summer or Tyrell), I just dump it for reserve. I'd like it more if I could justify running 2x Famine. I might drop it down to 2x.
