This is a fun deck I made a while ago and to my own surprise was quite succesful with on Prague Regional tournament. I have built it around Oldtown Scholar and to be able to stand its ground against ever present Martells and Targaryens.

From my experience worst matchup is Martell. Dorne shuts down Myrcella and The Queen's Assassin. Icon removal can keep my characters inactive and there is nothing i can do about that.

I was expecting Targaryens to be my best matchups, because of the strong characters I have and because I can get rid of their cards fairly quick. However they are still formidable opponents and you need pay close attention to everything you are going to do.

Tourney report

I am sorry, for I don't remember all the details from the matches, but I will try to write down the decisive moments from my point of view at least :)

Round 1 - James Mýval Weigl - Martell WtC - Win
I got lucky in seeing both of my Seized by the Guard early on, so I could have blanked Dorne and Flea Bottom. I maintained pressure both on and challenges and managed to get power faster than James through his Boneway.

Round 2 - Aleš Hrabal - Targaryen LotC - Win
This should have been my loss. I didn't see much saves so on Aleš's Trading with the Pentoshi turn where I was second player I using all my draw to find them, giving a plentyful of cards to Aleš as well. I wasn't worried about that because of the low reserve he had. I eventually found one on Tywin and on Tyrion and then we went to challenges.
Aleš had unprotected Khal Drogo, Ser Jorah Mormont with two power and betrayal tokens on him dragon, Littlefinger and some chud. He also had Plaza of Pride and one eco location. On hand he had something around 11 cards and one gold left.
I decided to block Drogo's first with my Tywin, thinking him save being on seven strenght. I was mistaken however, because The Iron Bank Will Have Its Due on Littlefinger followed by Dracarys! and Consuming Flames. With Tywin gone and Aleš claiming power on Drogo and for unopposed, I thought the game is done, since he was sitting on 14 power already. I blocked challenge with his chud. And then I was expecting third challenge with Jorah, which would gained Aleš the 15th power. But it didn't come. I am not quite sure if he thought Jorah will leave the game before crossing power or if he forgot he could do another challenge (i would have blocked the chall), so I went through with my challenges, and Valared next turn. From that point I slowly gained power and Aleš wasn't able to get back on board leading to my victory.

Round 3 - Ben Fox - Martell WtC - Win
I don't remember much from this one, only the ending. I was the first player and planning on finishing the game with Tywin and Jaime. The plot I used that turn was Forced March and I knelt Tywin to kneel all Ben's characters. Ben dropped Ghaston Grey but I didn't mind that much because I had 2 Treachery in hand. After with Jaime Ben used His Viper Eyes to get rid of one of mine Treacheries and tried to find second with Dorne. Then I went to trigger "The Rains of Castamere" and reveal Power Behind the Throne to stand Tywin with whom I then proceeded into challenge. Meanwhile Ben used Isle of Ravens to shuffle His Viper Eyes back in his deck and tried to search for it again with Dorne Luckily he didn't see it and thus the game was mine.

Round 4 - Lord Puky - Tyrell WtC - Win
This was my fastest game by far. Puky didn't have economy and on the first turn he managed to get out Margaery Tyrell (AMAF) with Bodyguard and dupe, Paxter Redwyne and two chuds against my duped Tywin, some chuds and eco locations. After my , which went unopposed he decided to claim Marg and use Bodyguard to save her. I answered with Treachery and next turn Valared to clean his board. I took one or two more turns to get enough power to win, but there was no real resistence after the board wipe.

Round 5 - Paul Scheindel - Martell WtC - Loss
Third Martell WtC I faced on the day. I wasn't happy about that. In combination with my lack of economy I really had tough time playing. Discarding The Iron Throne with my Jade Sea Dromond wasn't bad decision by itself, but I regreted not having that gold later in the game.

Round 6 - Reinhard Schefcik - Targaryen WtC - Loss
Once again I had troubles finding my eco and dupes, combine that with some mistakes I have made like forgetting to trigger Tyrion and Cersei and it's the game.

Top 16 - Garret - Targaryen LotC - Win
Garett was quite unlucky with his decklist checking. He forgot to write down Valar Morghulis and thus was playing with 3/0/1/6 plot instead. Of course I didn't know about that before our match, so I was pretty nervous when I didn't see my saves and had to play Tywin and Tyrion unprotected against his duped Drogo. I managed to get rid of his hand though and draw into some saves eventually and then gain the power. Do not remember if there was some deciding moment, except my unprotected start not being punished.

Top 8 - Martin Hechberger - Targaryen WtC - Loss
Double duped Tywin Shae and Myrcella on board against duped Daenerys Targaryen (TFM), double duped Qotho, duped dragon and another one without dupe. In a moment of brilliance I decided to claim Shae on , instead of getting rid of one of Tywin's dupes which lead to Myrcella getting burned and Tywin's trip to the Wall next turn. I couldn't recover from that and that was my end on the tourney.

Draw deck

As I said Oldtown Scholar was a cornerstone when building this deck. I wanted to abuse that draw and needed to pick a house that could do that effectively and profit from it. Lannisters seemed like an obvious choice, because of their overall lack of reliable draw and cards like Without His Beard or Lannisport Guard working really well with Scholar.

Apart from the two cards mentioned I included The Dragon's Tail and Late Summer Feast as well for the same purpose. The Dragon's Tail having another added benefit in letting my opponent go over his reserves when I have Cersei Lannister (LoCR) in the game.

However I had no intentions to let my opponent keep the cards I let him draw. That's why I decided to focus on challenges. Casterly Rock, Big Cersei, Wardens of the West, Genna Frey and The Queen's Assassin were next to be added.

The Queen's Assassin and Lannisport Guard works really well with Breaking Ties so that was second plot to be included.

At this point I knew I am going to run "The Rains of Castamere" as opposed to The Lord of the Crossing. When I was making this deck The Wars To Come weren't out yet, so I didn't really think about that.

I wanted to stop Martell, so I needed The King in the North and therefore some kings myself. Tommen Baratheon and The Boy King were obvious, not so obvious was perhaps Joffrey Baratheon (GoH), because he goes against my agenda with that faction card kneel. However being able to kill off Randyll, Tinder Marge, Drogo, new Dany or some of the Vipers during marshalling seemed good to me.

Seized by the Guard - Answer to Dorne and The Hightower as well as any of the numerous Targ locations. This card might be useless in some matchups, but it is absolutely essential in others and it really paid off during the tournament.

Jade Sea Dromond is pretty selfexplainatory considering the amount of locations in both Martell and Targ

Myrcella Baratheon is the real MVP of this deck. If she wasn't so suspectable to burn I would have included her 3 times.

I had to ommit Hound which might have been a mistake in retrospect, and I believe I probably didn't need Tyrion 3 times.

One time Flea Bottom is there for fun on Breaking Ties turn and to let me have some impact in challenges against heavy reset decks.

Rest of cards is basically Lanni good stuff where nothing too creative was done :)

Plot choices

Counting Coppers - another draw, to let me draw my draw to draw more :)

Forced March - this card is just awesome. especially with my 2drop icons. Kneel out opponent's board with when he Valars mine is just nice :)

Heads on Spikes - obvious choice with Cersei

Late Summer Feast - economy to pay for all my big guys, with downside i can jump out of with "The Rains of Castamere" and can exploit with Oldtown Scholar

The King in the North - This plot has one purpose. To stop Martell. But it can come in handy in other situations as well.

Time of Plenty - Opener

Valar Morghulis - All characters must die. Preferably those of your opponent.

Schemes

Wardens of the West - to get rid of opponent's cards. plus another trigger for Cersei

The Red Wedding - didn't really use it on the tourney so it could be possibly swapped out for Varys's Riddle or Wildfire Assault but there are times when it can come in handy

Power Behind the Throne, Filthy Accusations - Rains classics, and also my most used triggers of my agenda during the day

Breaking Ties - situational, but can turn the game around when its used on the right time.

Fun to see people trying out Lanni in new ways and congrats on a quite successful run. How often did you King in the North yourself without having a king? Wondering how much it hurt with all the eco and char triggers. Would you use W2C agenda instead nowadays?

Good to see Lannister do well!

Thank you for sharing! I played Lanni Rains in a little GNK last time and I am always searching for some ideas regarding Lannister decks.

Round 2, how did Tywin got removed from the challenge? You can only target character you control with The Iron Bank Will Have Its Due, because otherwise they wouldn't return to "your hand".

Duckbringer 63

@Ryaxs he played it on his own Littlefinger and then burned Tywin with Dracarys! and Consuming Flames. I updated the description, so its more clear now.

@SpiriTI remember only one time from the tournament, but that was calculated and I didn't lose so much by it as my opponent did. It's kinda like Valar you don't play it while it would be bad for you. But with the 3 kings I run, it's pretty safe to assume you will have one by turn 4-5 which is when you are usually going to play it against Martell.

Congratz, it's always nice for me to see Lannister doing well, and this build has some interesting choices. I'm playing Scholars as well in a Lannister Castamere build (this tells a lot about the available draw for the faction... lol) but since I focus on discarding their hand I wouldn't play cards like Dragon's Tail to fill their hand again. I see the possible interesting interactions there but I feel like it's a too much double edged, even if I may give it I try... :P I love the interaction with Without his beard on the other hand. The only thing I'm really surprised about is not to see Spider's Web in the schemes plot, since it should fit perfectly in this deck and it's so powerful with casterly rock: is there a particular reason why you didn't include it? Well done again by thw way, keep roaring! :P

Duckbringer 63

@NimerThanks a lot :) Well to put it simply, I didn't have space. I chose Wardens of the West over it, because it seemed more reliable discard to me, than The Spider's Web (I don't need to make another challenge). Had I tested more, I might have come to a different conclusion or maybe fit it in instead of The Red Wedding.

The Dragon's Tail needs to be played carefuly that's true. And I might add I have played it recklessly sometimes during the day - Tywin burning in round two was direct result of that, but I did need my cards. Most of the time however, I keep it on hand, and even choose to discard it on reserve if I have the pieces I need. But it is still wonderful to push your opponent over the reserve to gain that 15th power on Cersei :)
