Hello everyone,

This was the deck I built for our local store tournament here in Pittsburgh. We had 12 players, and I went undefeated for a 4-0 victory. Game 1 was against Stark Fealty. Game 2 was Lannister Fealty. Game 3 was Targ/Sun, and Game 4 was Targ/Lion.

The main theme of this deck is power gain/high kill. Personally, I believe this is the best option Stark can give. Having three copies of Robb, Eddard (WOTN), and The Blackfish create a high probability to draw--at least--one in your opening hand to get out during setup and start the renown power gain. Plus, they are 6 costers which allows more flexibility during your initial setup. Additionally, running plots with 2 claim, 3x Winter Is Coming, and 3x Ice create a deadly board wipe and control.

Admittedly, how you open depends on your, and your opponent's, setup. However, the plots I open with are usually A Noble Cause if I need to get out another 6 coster, Sneak Attack if I have Ice or Winter Is Coming to really cause some hurt if they only have 1 or 2 characters out, or--very seldom--A Time For Wolves to put either Summer into play for free, or Nymeria (For free) to gain intimidate on a character and start board control (However, this plot is better played later, I'll say why). Bear in mind, Starks want to go first--usually--so high initiative is great if you can manage. If you open A Noble Cause, Sneak Attack is a great follow-up plot once you have your big guys in play, especially Robb. If you opponent is foolish enough to initiate a military, let it go through, kill a Stark chud, Robb's ability stands everyone, and you can increase your power gain with their renown.

One of my favorite tactics is pulling off a 3 claim military win, they have 1 character, or 2 very big/important characters (In Game 4 my opponent had Mirri and Jaime). Knowing he wouldn't want to lose them both, plotting Marched To The Wall after Sneak Attack is a great tactic. The board is essentially your's at that point. To keep the pressure on, The Long Winter is another 2 claim plot that can really do some hurting. I strongly believe in Confiscation in the event that you are faced with a Milk Of The Poppy, Attained, Condemned, and/or Motley (Seriously, Motley is ridiculous). Wardens of the North is also outstanding, highly great stats, highly recommended.

The remaining characters do phenomenal work. Catelyn (Core) protected me from Mirri Maz Duur. Bran Stark defends against Draecarys!, Put To The Sword, Tears Of Lys, and if he is sacrificed with Robb in play, you stand all your characters. Furthermore, if you play A Time For Wolves, you put Summer into play--for free, and take Bran from your discard pile (See, I told you I would say why later). Note, do not duplicate Bran. Hang on to your duplicates and play them when you sacrifice him. Maester Luwin is key to help with card draw with Robb, and protects Bran from certain plots. Speaking of protection, Jory Cassel is fantastic. He absolutely protects from choice kill and 2 claim mil wins. Additionally, Gates of Winterfell is a must to draw during challenges.

The attachments are solid, but I am debating taking out one Little Bird to add an extra Nightmares. True, Little Bird protects from Tears Of Lys, especially with the 3 big 6 costers, but Nightmares did so much work yesterday. Nightmares is a Milk Of The Poppy for the phase--outstanding. Your opponent has no idea it's coming and cannot plan around it until it is too late. Also, really helps against all the Khal Drogo, Nymeria Sand, Mirri, Jaime, Tyrion power in my matchups I had to play. True, it does not stay past the phase, but you don't need it to especially when you have Ice about to choice kill someone and Winter Is Coming to raise the claim.

Wolf Dreams are a nice touch to pull Grey Wind, Lady, Nymeria, or Summer. Honestly, this won me the game yesterday do to pulling Lady and putting her on Eddard.

I know this is long, but I promised my group I would give a detailed breakdown of the deck. I hope everyone enjoyed it! Please feel free to leave a comment or suggestion.

Thanks, everyone!

This is one of the better looking Stark decks I've seen recently. Nice work with the report and the performance!

What if the opponent puts out enough in setup/Turn 1 to stop you ever getting that military challenge through?

@CameronD, thanks so much man! That honestly means a lot. I read all your posts and reviews on cardgamedb, so I am honored to receive a shout out!

@TheBrokenMeeple, very good point. The beauty of this deck is that there are multiple ways to win and combat an opponent's heavy military presence. Here are a few options:

During my Game 4 against Targ/Lion, my opponent had out Jaime, Syrio, The Hound, Drogon, and Rhaegal... It was not looking good for a military win on my side. However, I had out arguably the best Stark character, Eddard (WOTN), Syrio, Maester Luwin, Arya (WOTN),a few chuds, Jory, and--finally Robb. I could not beat him in military. I would block so he wouldn't get an unopposed, then stealth out his power icon characters for an unopposed power win with Eddard and Robb, that's 5 power in 1 challenge... He had to start playing differently--ultimately, this is how I won.

Moreover, the deck has stealth with Arya and Syrio. Those 2 plus one more 6 coster can bypass 3 of your opponent's characters which makes it very easy to win--use Ice and Winter Is Coming.

Additionally, another good tactic is to pull Nymeria with A Time For Wolves or Wolf Dreams, place her on Catelyn or Sansa. Win an intrigue by the right amount and use intimidate with Nyermia to kneel one of their big military characters.

Last, Wardens Of The North allows for this exact reason to pull off a mil win--if need be. You can undercommit your attack, then pull in additional characters as need be. I attack with 9 STR, opponent blocks with 11 STR, and here comes Sansa or Catelyn to allow me the win.

Definitely a few ways to pilot the deck around high mil opposition!

@TheBrokenMeeple, oops, I meant I had out Arya (Core) not Arya (WOTN) in my Game 4.

I guess, though that's an unusual board state for both sides to have so many characters on it unless it was Turn 5+ and military just wasn't happening ever. Never used Syrio yet, I know everyone loves him, but it's another expensive character to get out on top of all the other expensive characters. As if gold isn't already sparse enough as it is.

Rick IsLitFam 261

@TheBrokenMeeple, it was Turn 2 or 3, I believe... I played Sneak Attack and he played Trading With The Pentoshi. Usually, it will be difficult for your opponent to out Mil you on turn 1, but it is possible. I definitely hear you with concerns for Syrio, but trust me, he is outstanding. He has stealth, plus giving another character a mil icon (Protection from Nymeria Sand) and stealth is fantastic.

MargareyWillHaveMyBabies! 1

Still on the fence with Pentoshi. In Turn 1 it's an insane gamble, even after that it's only guaranteed advantage when your opponent has no cards in hand.

Rick IsLitFam 261

@TheBrokenMeeple, agreed. Pentoshi turn 1 is not usually wise. Although some players will say it works for them. I believe it's best as a mid-game plot, where your opponent has very, very few cards in hand so they are top decking and cannot make full use of the +3 gold.

Travis Snow 3

Nice deck. Would you change anything with the new cards from this coming chapter pack?

Rick IsLitFam 261

@Travis Snow, thanks so much, man! I really appreciate it. Well, I always test out new cards and get a feel for how the new cards are played. To be honest, I think Ward can be useful but also it may just sit in your hand. Septa Mordane is more exciting to me. Sansa becomes STR 6 with renown, Arya (Core) becomes a tri-con with stealth.

Those will be interesting, but the card I am looking forward to the most is the Kings Of Winter agenda coming out in the next few months! I think the Starks will be able to play this very well.

Travis Snow 3

Septa Mordane seemed like an obvious swap for Luwin. Without Jon in the deck his is limited and 1 less strength too.

I know you talked about the flexibility of a Time for Wolves. I was thinking maybe taking out either that or Sneak Attack for Close Call. It helps mitigate one of the giants getting an early kill. I realize you run a ton of dupe but just in case a key character goes down it helps and the card draw is nice and it's Winter.

I attest that this deck is well thought out and well built. @Guardian0988 is also good pilot as I was his round 4 opponent. When he wasn't busy doing military 3 claim he was taking 2-3 power at time. My deck was built around controlling his board. It does an excellent job of protecting itself from kill control. I use mirra maz and ptts as others to control what opponents can do to me.

I will say dueling Syrio's is why this game went to turn 7. If one side lost a Syrio the game could have turned quickly. He's such a beast giving you a second stealth character its worth all 5 gold.

xikitins 53

Why no almost a single copy of Jon Snow? It is damn good with Rob.

Rick IsLitFam 261

@cligato7, thanks so much man! We had a great game and you are absolutely right that Syrio was MVP.

@xikitins, Jon Snow is definitely good with Robb. However, Jon's sole ability is to sacrifice to stand. On the other hand, Grey Wind is just as good--if not better--than Jon for the standing with Robb tactic. Grey Wind has intimidate, and can kill your small characters to stand your team. Also, Grey Wind can kill their small characters. I believe Grey Wind flows better with this deck, and he can be pulled with A Time For Wolves and Wolf Dreams.

Acudogon 1

Thank you! It is a great deck. What do you think about ser Rodrik?

Rick IsLitFam 261

@Acudogon, I have made some changes to this deck since the release of True Steel. Ser Rodrik does not make the cut. Insight is great, but the renown power gain from the other 6 costers are better. The best 6 cost characters are Robb, Ned, and The Blackfish.
