Had the pleasure of travelling over to Kuluar Lumpur representing Singapore in the Malaysian Open tournament themed as "Treachery in Qarth", the 1st leg of the community driven tournaments in South East Asia.

It was a surreal experience as its my first time traveling to play competitively and meeting new people and playing against a different meta outside my country was a refreshing experience!

I brought my trusty bara-sun deck that i used to win the recent SG Store championship and top 8 in the SG Regionals for this tournament as i can't seem to enjoy playing anything else XD

The deck went 4-1 in Swiss and 2-1 in the top 8, losing in the finals.

Due to my short term memory i am unable to recall the exact details of my games, so i'll just write a brief post-tournament report along with whatever stood out this tournament.

5 Rounds of Swiss (4-1)

Edison - Targ banner Lion (win) Entering this tournament, the goal was to meet and play against players outside of Singapore, and i got that chance in my 1st game against Edison. He was a new player and never faced a control deck such as my bara-sun before and was struggling to keep up with stannis. My lock down suite locked in by plot 3 and with bob and lightbringer, i closed the game by plot 5. 1-0

CK - Stark Fealty (win) My teammate and rival from Singapore, our games and encounters has grown into a show match level among our play group. We know each others deck so well, we hate playing against each other but somehow we're matched in the 2nd game. CK was extremely unlucky however this game, his 1st hand had 5 limited locations, and even after a mul, he drew the same 5 limited locations, all to the credit of my voodoo expert deck cutting skills! (which works only on him). His setup was extremely poor and i managed to drop his entire hand by plot 3, allowing me to open with Trading with the Pentoshi without any fear of him coming back. Game ended after he poppy-ed Stannis Baratheon and i marshalled Rattleshirt's Raiders with no military icons on his side, he conceded. 2-0

Kelly - Lannister banner Dragon (win) Another fellow Singaporean and teammate who has had numerous play tests against my deck, Lanni drag is a naturally aggressive deck, however my deck excels against aggression. Ser Ilyn Payne had only 1 kill before he was knelt all the way, which in my opinion was a waste of 6 gold, especially with Stannis Baratheon on the table. I did what my deck did best, control and win slowly, eventually closed it out. 3-0

Ervin - Greyjoy banner Stag (loss) Ervin spent the whole night, deck building till 4am the night before and it payed off, his deck is really aggressive and manipulative. The combination of kneel and stealth to lead into unopposed is extremely difficult to handle. He had a poor setup of a single Balon Greyjoy, The Seastone Chair and Sea Tower. I had a duped Nymeria Sand, duped Selyse Baratheon and a Dragonstone Port. i reloaded my hand with Robert Baratheon and Lightbringer. He opened with Trading with the Pentoshi and Calm Over Westeros for me. I got greedy seeing bob and lightbringer with the 3 extra gold, i decided to go 1st. Which was the biggest mistake of the game. I dropped Bob with lightbringer, thinking i had a attachment on bob with dups on nym and selyse, i wasn't afraid of the The Seastone Chair. But to my demise, he dropped Melisandre to kneel bob, Milk of the Poppy on nym and we proceeded to challenges. I opened with a challenge with Selyse Baratheon hoping to drop whatever he was holding on but to no avail. He did a unopposed , leading into a We Do Not Sow to remove Lightbringer off bob and following with a unopposed challenge, chairing bob. He had the perfect storm in his hand to counter my board, game went downhill from there.

Reza - Martell banner Rose (win) Finally, after 3 Singaporeans i finally meet Reza and his awesome Martell rose deck. I would give this match the highlight game of my trip as we were playing around each other, figuring out each others decks. The rounds were long and intense, every move, challenge action, marshalling action mattered. I predicted a Tears of Lys in his hand, playing around it the entire game along with the fear of Put to the Sword and Growing Strong. I was on the defence the entire game, using bob to defend every challenge, gaining him 6 power from renown on defence. I finally got a lightbringer on bob and pushed the game through. Really hope to play with Reza again for the Singapore open. Reza if you're reading this, please come! XD

Top 8 (2-1)

Kelly rematch - Lannister banner Dragon (win) A rematch from swiss, however slightly tougher for me, he had the dream setup of Tywin Lannister a reducer and a location reducer, i can't remembered what i had on setup but i was playing on the backfoot for the 1st 2-3 plots. However, due to the nature of my deck, i managed to engage a full lock down on his deck, dropped his entire hand, forcing him to Counting Coppers and pushing the lead of my tempo, a few missed Tyrion Lannister procs were missed on his part which might have helped abit, but my control mechanic was in full swing.

Ervin rematch - Greyjoy banner Stag (win) Redemption match for me against Ervin, i went into this game with a totally different mind set this time, i played extremely patiently against him, playing around him and his sneaky shenanigans. The mind set of "i can't let a greyjoy go 1st" is how you lose against Ervin's deck due to mel, poppies and kneel. Going second was key against his deck, eventually bob with a dup and dupped lightbringer was dropped, (i'm not going to fall to the chair again!) closing the game out for me.

CK rematch - Stark Fealty (loss) The final game was a mix of karma, stupid mistakes and luck. Our dear Chewy Quah did a live commentary of our game on facebook, it was so well written i shall just copy and paste whatever he wrote for our game!

CK sets up Winterfell and the Gates of Winterfell, and one steward watching the castle. Travis only sets up a Kingsroad, Bastard Daughter and a Knight of the Sun

First plot: stark goes with Noble Cause and Bara summons into a Fiery Followers. Stark goes first. Stark marshalls a kingsroad, and Bran for free (noble cause). And then he drops in Jon Snow (WotN) and Osha. Baratheon player marshalls Mel and kneels Osha. And he applies an attachment - the Condemned on Bran Stark, taking away his power icon. On to Challenges Stark swings first with military of 4-STR, using Jon Snow, kneels Winterfell to protect himself. Bara defends with Bastard Daughter and claims it. But unable to trigger the interrupt. He then swings back with an Intrigue challenges. Wins unopposed and plays Tears on Jon Snow, cancelled by Bran. Stark drops a kennel master from hand for intrigue claim. Final challenge with the Knights, power, unopposed End of challenges phase. No one wins dominance. Bara discards Vanguard Lancer for reserve.

Second round: plots. Stark goes Calling the Banners. Collects two gold. Bara goes Calm over Westeros. Naming Military. Bara player marshalls fiery followers and kneels osha. Dupes Mel. Passes over to Stark. Who then plays a Milk on Mel, blanking her. Drops a roseroad. Stark completes marshaling by dropping another steward, shaggydog and 4-STR Sansa (WOTN) Bara swings with Intrigue with Mel, stark defends with Sansa. Wins. Due to the +1 STR from Winterfell. An error as the Bara player has forgotten about it. Passes challenges to Stark. Stark swings with a Steward chump power. Bara responds unopposed. Shaggydog goes in for military. Bara defends with knight and fiery followers. Forgetting his calm. Stark triggers Jon Snow sacrifice shaggydog to stand Sansa. Sansa goes for unopposed intrigue. Dropping tears for intrigue claim. Big hit to the Bara player!

Round 3 Plots: Bara flips Calling the Banners, Stark flips a Time for Wolves to put Lady into play, attaching to Osha. Stark go first Marshaling. Stark drops a Kingsroad, a dupe of Jon Snow and core set Catelyn. Bara marshalls Vanguard Lancer, discarding one power from the Stark house card, then marshalls Moonboy, then plays a milk on Jon Snow, and a Condemned on Catelyn, removing her power icon. Stark swings first with a military using Osha. Unopposed, Bara claims the vanguard lancer. Sansa initiates an intrigue challenge, Mel defends but Lady moves to Sansa, standing her, winning the intrigue. Robert Baratheon is dropped from hand for claim! Power challenge using Sansa, Bara responds unopposed. Bara does Power with Moonboy and Knights of the Sun. It is unopposed by Stark. Draws a card for insight.

Round 4 Plots: stark flips Long Winter dropping a power each from both players, while Bara flips Filthy Accusations kneeling Jon Snow. Stark marshalls The Blackfish, paying with his kingsroad, then pays one gold to move Lady to Osha. Bara marshalls another Knight of the Sun. Both Knights now have renown. Stark uses Gates to draw a Greywind. Swings with Mil, Osha and Blackfish, but it's only opposed by Fiery Followers, so he removes osha from challenge. Wins it. Renown and draws a card. Claim is saved by Mel's dupe and Fiery Follower dies. Intrigue with Sansa. Unopposed. Two copies of In The Name of your King are dropped from hand for claim. Stark swings with Winterfell Steward as chump power challenge. Bara contemplates on defense. He defends with one knight of the sun and Moonboy. Gains renown on defense and a card draw. Baratheon returns the favor with a power challenge with the other knight of the sun and Mel. Unopposed. Dom goes to stark. Current power totals. Stark - 4, Bara - 5

Round 5 Plots: stark Confiscates the milk on Jon Snow, Bara flips Trading with the Pentoshi. Stannis hits the board. And Obara Sand as well. Then another fresh milk is played on Jon Snow. Stark coolly plays milk on Stannis. Stark completes marshaling with ROBB STARK. And attaches Nymeria on Catelyn Challenges: Bara swings first with Power. 19-STR. Using Moonboy, Stannis, Mel and both Knights of the Sun. Stark defends with Sansa and Sansa alone. Bara gains two renown on the Knights and draws card for insight. Over to stark. He powers with Robb and Blackfish. Defended by one Obara. Gaining Stark his own two renown. Intrigue with Catelyn. Unopposed. Red Keep is dropped from hand for claim. Military with Osha. Unopposed. Moonboy dies for claim. Lady is moved over to Robb before end of challenges. Dom goes to Stark. Current power totals. Stark - 9, Bara - 7

Round 6. Bara Wildfires while Stark Marches! Marched triggers first. Sansa and Obara is marched Wildfire kills Osha, Jon Snow and Winterfell steward. On the side of Baratheon, Mel dies. While CK calmly marshalls Jory Cassel. Passes to Baratheon attaching a milk on Robb. Intrigue from Catelyn Stark. Unopposed. Shereen is dropped from hand for claim. Intimidate keyword is triggered and Kneels Stannis (from Nymeria attachment on Catelyn) Jory and Blackfish goes for military. Unopposed. CK pays a gold to move Nymeria. To Blackfish. Intimidate.

Travis concedes

Congrats CK for winning the tournament! You da man!

Correction! Deck list has an error:

-1 Vanguard Lancer

+1 Littlefinger

YEEZUS 53

congrats on the finish and very neat deck! many times i see stag banner to add melisandre to control decks, this is interesting by adding nymeria to an already existing melisandre control deck. are there any changes you would make before playing again? maybe even handed justice which works well with fiery followers?

iTrvis 371

@YEEZUS Thanks! I'm actually in the works of editing the deck already! I'm trying to squeeze in more intrigue, allowing me to control all 3 challenges, something that bara is particularly weak in. Even handed justice is too expensive for this deck and infact, in the name of your king is a more powerful kneel at the cost of 1 gold, however that was a draw back against stark players and winterfell (which was what happened in the finals)

Nice deck and congrats on your finish! Travelling and playing Thrones, that's a dream come true.

What do you think about the Stinking Drunk? Not effective enough?

What is the point for Maester Cressen in this deck?

iTrvis 371

@Pr1celessIn the Singapore meta, Milk of the Poppy is everywhere, and with banner sun for the attachments and greyjoys with their nets along with starks and Ward, Maester Cressen is extremely valuable. That being said, i won't play Maester Cressen against a stark player unless he warded something else.

@iTrvisthanks for explanstion, it's usefull information!
