Wigg 112

This is the deck that I piloted to victory at the 42 player Laval regional at BD Cosmos.

I'd like to thank Julien Vasquez for doing a great job running and TOing the tourney. Also my good friend Alfredo Contreras for helping me playtest until 3 am and with some fine tuning with the deck.

Round 1 - Shomar – Greyjoy Fealty

In the first round, Shomar had Asha, 2 raiding longships, seastone and iron mines. I had tears, two treachery and PTTS and more or less cleared his board of threats. I had Fast Eddie and Arya on my board along with a few other characters. I put the Bodyguard on Fast Eddie and immediately new that I should have put it on Arya instead because with stealth and an attachment she could oppose all the military challenges. A few turns later he was down to Theon alone and he was giving me some trouble since I don't run Marched but he could not recover.

Result: Win

Round 2 – Julien - Targaryen Lion

Julien was a very nice guy and a relatively new player who put up quite the fight but he made a few mistakes that cost him the game.

Result: Win

Round 3 – Carter – Lannister Rose

I had the dream setup, Tywin, Roseroad and a reducer but I had no other characters, and 3 limited cards. I saw maybe 5 more character cards all game including dupes, but I had ridiculous econ and Tywin was able to fend off many attacks with his +STR from gold.

Result: Win

Round 4 – Carl - Martell Lion

This was a tough match. Ghaston Grey was out early along with Nymeria and Tyrion. I setup a kingsroad, rattleshirts (Figured I'd need them vs martell) and 3 cost reducers. Rattleshirts got Tears'd round one but hey. I got Tywin out and he got milked. I confiscated and he got attainted so I threw him at Ghaston. He got popped back to my hand and I played him out the next turn (going 2nd so he couldn't be attainted again). Tyrion also got bounced to hand from another Ghaston. Tywin finally died to Tyene but i already had too much power for Carl to hold on.

Result: Win

Round 5 – Philippe – Greyjoy Fealty

Philippe and I decided to ID

Result: ID

Round 6 – Daniel – Lannister Kraken

I was at 22 points and Daniel was the only 25 pointer at this point. We IDd and took a rest before top 8.

Result: ID

I went into the top 8 in 4th seed with my 24 points at the end of swiss.

Top 8 - Guillaume - Lannister Wolf

I was expecting a lot of Stark today and it turned out this Lanni Wolf mirror match was the closest thing I saw all day. I had 2 milks turn 1. He played his Tywin out turn 1, I went 2nd and milked him. On turn two he played Confiscation to remove it, but he chose to go 2nd so I milked him again. Both of us saw no econ locations until turn 5 or so, but I managed to get +2 gold every turn and he did not managed to do so once. My econ won the day this game.

Result: Win

Top 4 - Adam - Lannister Kraken

Adam started out with Tyrion, Mountain and Theon. I had a duped fast Eddie, Tywin and some random chuds. I was able to defend the military challenges enough to not get put to the sword but the Mountain got two pillages off, thankfully it was a roseroad and a bodyguard. At one point I did a UO mil against him and fearing Marched he saved his cost reducer with an Iron Mine. The next turn I was able to use Arya and Eddie to get off a put to the sword on the mountain and I managed to control the game from there on out.

Result: Win

Finals - Jon - Targaryen Lion

We started off with his board with Mirri duped, Jorah, and duped Tyrion. Mine was Jaime, Tyrion, and a few other characters. I used Jaime to PTTS Jorah turn 1 and was able to defend against Mirri, racking up power rather well. Then Tyrion was given a crown of gold and I didn't see any other int icons for a while which was a problem. He got out Illyrio and I managed to survive a turn with Treachery and another with Nightmares, but eventually I ran out of tricks and started losing characters. Thankfully at this point I had much more power than him and was able to pull it off with a weaker board state.

Result: Win

What an awesome feeling it was at the end of the day to take the win! It was really nice to meet a bunch of people I met in the Facebook group as well as the rest of the community, there were so many awesome people there. We even had 2 pregnant women play today, it was quite the diverse group!

Could You tell more about Your strategy in round 5 and round 6 ? Was the matchup favourable ? What were Your mvp cards in this rounds ? Would You consider IDing in the final and taking half of the playmatt ?

Acloakofred 53

I am so glad they are removing ID

imabunneh 361

Proof that ID favours the best players. When are you going to let the worst players shine?

Wigg 112

@Acloakofred @imabunnehI highly doubt that I am the first person to ID who won a regional, but thank you for your comments anyways.

Let me state first off that I do not like IDs, I was not happy with them when they were put into the rules, and I will be happy to see them gone. In the meantime, I am playing a competitive person playing a competitive game against other players who have IDs as a tool in their belt to win the tournament as well.

If my taking 2 IDs and going undefeated in my 7 other games against a very tough field diminishes my win in your eyes then I am very sorry to hear that. I am proud of what I accomplished on Saturday and will remember the day for years to come.

@ebejI realize that you are trolling me so I will reply in kind. My strategy for Rounds 5 and 6 was that I was tired and hungry, and if I ID'd I could take a rest. For round 5, Greyjoy fealty always scares me, and Philippe is a tough player and a friend. Rather than risking knocking each other out, we decided to ID. In Round 6 both Daniel and I would be assured to make the top cut if we took and ID so we did. My MVP card in those rounds? That's a tough one, probably my debt card which allowed me to go to Tim Hortons across the street and get a chicken salad sandwich combo. If I ID'd in the final, I would already have won a playmat from the top 8, I'd have to consider taking half of the trophy and those things are hard to cut, so we figured we should play it out :P

Teslatrooper 1

Congrats on the win!!! You deserve it!!!

Banjo 97

Curious if Jory was any good in a Banner deck did you see him much or use him at all. Also If Song summers is Better than Clam over Westereos? Was the bonus Strength Clutch to Push through challenges? Or was it more for openers?

Wigg 112

@Teslatrooper Thank you sir :) It was hard earned

@Banjo Jory is an interesting add. He is another character that lasts through First Snow, and in this tourney I actually did play him out on a turn when my opponent revealed First Snow. Since the deck relies on Bran as the only event cancel, having Jory save Bran is worth it as well. He's also awesome to save Fast Eddie if you don't have a dupe or bodyguard on him. I had several people play Tears of Lys on Jory just to get rid of him. The ironic part is that I can sac him instead of having him die so if I ran two Jory I could play out the 2nd later.

Song of Summer was my opener in many games, I do not expect other players to open with a Winter plot, so every time I opened with it, the +1 stuck. It lets you use your cost reducers to defend against opponent's cost reducers and win, and there were a number of times where my opponent's forgot about the +1, one time resulting in their Tyrion being Put to the Sword turn 1. It was also clutch against Mirri because it allows me to defend more easily. For example, Jaime can defend against her by himself and win that turn. Calm is a good plot, but I thought I would try something different, and it worked out well for me :)

Banjo 97

@WiggNice to see something different when it comes to plot choices! Well fought good sir you had to face quite the gauntlet.

Wigg 112

@Banjo Thanks :) I recall two times when I really wish I had Marched in my plot deck. But there were about 5 or 6 times where my opponents made sub-optimal plays to avoid being Marched. Including one person who Marched themselves expecting me to do it as well and was rather disappointed when they lost a 6 cost character and I lost a Lannisport Merchant. :)

YEEZUS 53

Congrats man! No shame is double drawing - it is currently 100% within the rules.

Probably the most notable thing here is the plot deck - most Lannister builds seem to have marched + first snow as a combo sequence, but you used long winter and song of summer which gives better econ and the double claim. Would you change any of those going forward? Did the +1 from song ever help against either of the Targ decks you faced?

Would you keep Jory, or would it be better as a second bodyguard? Jory seems to have more upside, potentially, but bodyguard can help protect the lannister guys also.

Wigg 112

@YEEZUS Thank you sir :) I personally don't like First Snow. It can wipe boards for sure, but it can backfire badly at times as well so I went for consistency instead. I am happy with how my plot deck ran, The Long Winter was put in to put pressure on my opponents as well as an on demand counter to Winterfell. Song of Summer was a great opener or surprise plot, it would definitely help vs Targ but I usually had Bran out to deal with Dracarys or there were no dragons on the board.

I like Jory a lot as he is more versatile than a body guard. Once you bodyguard a character your others are still vulnerable. Whereas Jory comes out and he could save Eddie from a Tears or Bran from an Illyn Payne. He also stays out through First Snow. It's true thay he doesn't save the Lannisters but that's what the milks, nightmares and treacheries are for :)

BillyDooku 110

@Wigg Thanks for sharing your list. Mostly different from mine in the plot deck. Wildfire and The Long Winter are both awesome plots that I couldn't fit in with my First Snow/Marched configuration.

And as you saw, people play around Marched even when you don't have it. I think that was my doom.

Congrats on your win!

intothefantasy 1

possible for you to explain to me your plot card strategy? such as when you plan to use those plots? under which situations and what kind of hand are you looking at? such as pentoshi

Wigg 112

@intothefantasy That question is rather complicated, but I will do my best to make a short answer suffice.

Song of Summer is a nice opener. It has good stats, is Naval-Proof and it is very rare to see a winter plot opened with by an opponent.

If i need to get a character in play, I either play Noble Cause or Trading. If my opponent is low on cards because of my intrigue challenges, often times the 3 gold they get from trading goes to waste.

Counting Coppers is used for when either you are low on cards and need a refill, or you are digging for something important, like a kill effect or Treachery or a particular character.

I think Confiscation is pretty obvious, play it when you want to get rid of an attachment, usually a Milk of the Poppy on Tywin :P

The Long Winter was put in the deck mostly to handle killing Stark players when Winterfell is out. Since it is a winter plot, Winterfell cannot be used to stop me from my triggered reactions. The plot also happens to have 2 claim, and 4 gold which is pretty solid for a 2 claim. When your board state is in good shape and you want to put the pressure on, or close out the game, this plot helps. Losing a power when it's revealed is unfortunate, but it isn't too bad.

Wildfire is a great plot and in the current meta I will not leave home without it. Save it until your opponent has to make a hard choice when you play it. If you can set yourself up to have 3 impactful characters out and some other chuds that you can do without, that's the time to play it.

intothefantasy 1

@Wigg thanks for the explanation, detail enough for me to understand. I am a starter for this game and handling plots is kinda hard for me to decide when is the right time. Lannister is one of my fav house and i will surely try out this deck.

All your thoughts regarding the plots are very good information for other decks as well since there are a lot of general thoughts on it.

another question is, does this deck rely on initiative of going 1st? usually will you pick first if you given the choice?

Wigg 112

@intothefantasy No problem.

First or second preference depends on the board state and my opponent. If I have a Milk of the Poppy in my hand and my opponent's board isn't impressive, I like to go second so I can choose the best target to put it on after they have finished marshalling.

If you have a big bomb character in your hand like Tywin, sometimes it's nice to go second so you can see what you have to face in the Challenges Phase before putting him out. If your opponent drops Arya and Ice on her for example, you may know at that point that you cannot defend the challenge and you would just lose him.

The main reason that Lannisters like to go first is to have a gold for Treachery to cancel their opponent's Kingsroads. I find that with the release of Trading With the Pentoshi and other high income plots, cancelling the Kingsroad isn't as impactful, but you should still try to do it when you think it will slow them down :)

Personally, I usually like to go 2nd, unless I'm playing against Greyjoy!

intothefantasy 1

@Wiggcancelling kingsroads, thats something i never thought about haha. Good idea tho, thanks for the info.

one last question i guess, what would you like to see in your starting hand? what will you mulligan for?

Wigg 112

@intothefantasy Since everyone runs Marched to the Wall, I was not willing to setup a single, expensive character. I always try to look for one character that costs 5 or more, one or more characters that cost 1-2 to go with it, and an economy location. The rule of thumb is don't mulligan an average setup (3 cards), because you might get something worse.

An example of a decent start would be something like Jaime, a Lannisport Merchant, and a Kingsroad. Even if you don't have an economy location, if you started with something like Tyrion with 3 cost reducing characters, you've got your economy going there too.

intothefantasy 1

@Wigg thanks for all the advise, will take all these into account during my next play test.

intothefantasy 1

@Wigg just some quick question, do you see if there is any improvement for this deck? if yes, what would you change? also i would like to know what type of bad match up does this deck has?

Wigg 112

@intothefantasy I can't really think of anything I'd change in the current meta. After the Kings of Summer and Winter agendas are released things may be different, though.

If you get the right cards, I don't think this deck really has a bad matchup.

akenathon80 1

@Wigg great solid deck congrats! what about add Janos slynt? Maybe -1 ilyn +1 janos .. just to Give a try Do you think he can improve the deck in 1-2× ?

Wigg 112

@akenathon80sorry for the late reply. I think Janos is interesting, but I am concerned he is more of a trap card. 2 STR is really low so if you want to do a challenge with him he needs support from another character or he needa gold. I do want to toy around with his intimidate though.

I think 2x Illyn was the right call, as he is the easiest way to get rid of Bran Stark and get my kill effects off against Stark Fealty decks.
