I played this deck to win NYC’s 2.0 Kickoff tournament. I went 4-1; beat Bara Fealty twice, Targ Featly once, and GJ Banner Sun once; lost to Stark Banner Lion. Check out this week’s Beyond the Wall (11/1) for a discussion.

I would change a few cards after having played some games. Naval Superiority, while great in theory, didn’t work so well in practice. I think I’d include a Wildfire Assault for those games (such as the one I lost to the Stark/Lion) where I could’t get off to a fast start.

I would drop the Littlefingers. Can’t play him early because you need the gold for high-impact events or big Lanni guys; can’t afford him late. I might go up to 3x Drogon and Joff to make sure Dracarys/TIDFL go off. Could also think about a second Moneylender; but that would make for 9 limited instead of 8.

With only 3 Lord and 4 unique characters, don’t you have trouble playing your events sometimes?

Do you think the 3 Syrio’s Training are necessary?

Did you consider Rebuilding to recycle Dracarys!?

reclusive 2

That’s some fine deckbuilding. Well done!

1) How did the lack of Dragon recursion (Fire and Blood) affect you?

2) Is the lack of The Roseroad something that you would do in most Banner decks or is it exclusive to this one, in order to hit the ground running quicker?

Vaapad 267

@Alsciende - I don’t have trouble playing the events because of the multiple copies. I need 1 of 8 character cards before I can play TTIDFL (just like Dracarys) and 1 of 10 for Treachery. Counting coppers is there to reduce the variance further. Syrio’s training might be overkill, but Tyrion as a tricon is pretty amazing. And they’re great for setup, the importance of which can’t be overstated. I’m not a huge fan of rebuilding because 1) it takes the pressure off and 2) I don’t think there’s enough draw to justify it.

Vaapad 267

@reclusive - every now and then you draw a dead dragon. The more kill events there are in your meta, the more you want fire and blood. I cut it for the treacheries but could go back. Including it is probably the right call.

The roseroads just weren’t fast enough for me. It was an interesting discovery to be sure. I think most banner decks still want them, but this deck in particular needs a big first two turns, so having to play roseroad for the future is pretty awful.

I like the deck, Vaapad. Would you replace the Littlefingers with The Hound once Take the Black is officially released? He would seem to fit in well here.

Tzeechel 1

I love the look of this deck as well.

I’m also pretty new to deck building for thrones, and am wondering your thoughts on Unsullied in the place of Little Finger? My thought is that they stack and would help dracarys find targets, plus are cheaper to play than Little Finger, but aren’t targets for Kings Road either.

Alexfrog 266

Congrats!

I really dont understand the purpose of the Syrio’s Training. Most of your characters already have military icons, except for Tyrion pretty much. There is no Dany to try to buff with it.

Vaapad 267

@cml - embarrassingly, I don’t know what he hound does! I’m not up on spoilers.

@Tzeechel - yes unsullied could be a good option. Alternatively fire and blood for dragon refursion.

@Alexfrog - while I already have many mil icons, winking that claim 2 mil challenge on R1 is of paramount importance. And the mil ok icons on th Dragons don’t really count, as they kneel for dracarys. So syrios training not only is great for setup, but it gives mil icons to joff, Tyrion, and 8 1-Str weenies. And because it bounces back when a weenie is killed, you can replay it later on a better target. I would no drop them.

love this deck man, are you gonna be at the NYC tourny on the 28th?

MiSiO 278

Very interesting approach to Targaryen/Lanni. Fresh. Could I ask about few things?

    • Calling the Banners in a kill deck? Calm Over Westeros would not be a better choice? What arguments are behind choosing Calling the Banners? Is a Sneak attack an opening plot?
  1. No stand effects (Tyrion+Illyrio) which would be great to have with Syrio Training (Illyrio) and against kneel. Could You tell us why? No Dany is rather obvious for me, I do not use her myself lately but lack of Illyrio is less understandable.

MiSiO 278

Hound is even added to ThronesDB card pool (not all cards from CP1 are). Check him out. Great card.

Vaapad 267

@keithsboredom - I will certainly be at Red Saturday — see you there!

@MiSiO - I like the 6 initiative on calling the banners, and if I get behind it can bet me a ton of gold to play a big dude and still have cash left for several events, or a price Things I Do for Love. Calm over westeros just isn’t as explosive when I’m down and need to make a big dent. I passed on Illyrio bc he is pricey to play, and then requires gold for the stand, to boot. That’s just too much money.

MiSiO 278

Thanks, What about TTIDFL? To bounce potential claim soakers before claim?

Vaapad 267

@MiSiO - exactly - TTIDFL is usually to costly to bounce a big guy, but it’s great for spending 1-2 to bounce chud before mil claim and follow with Marched.

agktmte 1486

@Vaapadsince you are considering cutting Littlefinger, could Magister Illyrio take that place or would you rather replace him for an even lower curve? such as the third copy of Joffrey Baratheon, Drogon, or Viserys Targaryen.

Also, if The Roseroad, is too slow, why use Lannisport Moneylender at all? Could that be cut for a third Illyrio’s Estate or Western Fiefdom?

Vaapad 267

@agktmte - re: littlefinger, I’d go lower curve. I’m not hot on illyrio bc he’s too expensive to use along with the events. Re: roseroad vs moneylender, I haven’t played enough games to have a good answer. 36-37 characters feels right; I certainly don’t want to draw into locations mid-game. The 1x moneylender was kind of an experiment. 2str int is good for the cost, and if he gets me an extra gold now and then? That seems ok. There could be a higher impact option though. But I don’t think I’d put in another location.

MiSiO 278

I find Illyrio very helpful vs kneel, especially with Tyrion. Treachery is also great as it is a Mel cancel but no stand effects hurts a lot and 1 stand i better than 1 kneel.

kennish 206

I piloted a variation of this deck to 2nd place during our Westeros Wednesdays tourney. I love that it feels like a 1.0 deck because of the curve. You’re just doing so much per turn unlike other decks that just churn out one guy per turn.

Vaapad 267

@MiSiO - I agree with all of that, but one stand from Illyrio costs 7 gold and is plain on the board; one cancel from treachery is a surprise and costs 1 gold. That’s much easier to manage and unexpectedly foils your opponent’s plans.

Vaapad 267

@kennish - what was different, and what did you lose to? Did you think any of your differences were improvements?

MiSiO 278

@Vaapad I agree. It was more of a general statement. How did You deal with kneel without stand effects? I guess it was a matter of pure numbers in Sneak Attack turn+?

@kennish Yes, what was different? I test many Targ builds but this one is more than just interesting so I would love to hear.

kennish 206

@Vaapad @MiSiO I aggresively lowered the cost curve with my deck, basically just trying out @Vaapad’s suggestion on another take on the deck.

I dropped Littlefinger as well as a copy of The Tickler. For Joffrey Baratheon, Braided Warrior, and Drogon. I dropped both copies of Treachery for Fire and Blood. Also took out Naval Superiority for Wildfire Assault.

The Braided Warrior was really good, as it allowed me to pull off kill events better (since our only stealth is Tyrion). I ultimately lost to Bara Fealty because of conservative play on my part — I should have used Counting Coppers earlier for a second dragon because my first one was always knelt.

If I were to change up the deck, I would probably drop Wildfire Assault and Calling the Banners. We’re so aggressive in the early rounds that there won’t be too much characters left on their board. I would probably try running Naval Superiority and maybe Summons?

MiSiO 278

@kennishI do not use Littlefinger in my Targ for a while and it was a good choice not to include him. As it was mentioned earlier. He do not fit the theme and cost curve.

I also do not like Naval. Wildfire is my choice. Good gold, great initiative to start with. Calling is also a bit odd. Great Initiative but rarelly I can get +2 gold. I was thinking of Fortified Position - turns Mel/Stannis/ GJ stealth for a turn, allows Jorah to engage without a risk of getting to renown :P etc.

I can not decide - Tretchery / F&B so I run both. 13 events. My biggest change was to skip HAnd’s Jundgment for TIDFL - I hope it will be a nasty surprise to my opponents.

Braid warriors - great. Better than 1 copy of Burned men?

I have 2 copies of Unsullied - they can be NASTY (and they also help pulling PTTS easier). But I agree that -1 Tickler +1 Joffrey is not a bad choice. 8 dragons as well.

MiSiO 278

@VaapadTell me. How often were You abel to PTTS someone? I play a similar deck for a long now and I was unable to PTTS a single character. Either no gold or STR. How did it work for You?

Vaapad 267

I rarely had trouble getting it off to be honest, but small sample size. Coupling it with the other removal events really helps.
