Greyjoy Summer - AGOT 2 Demo 0 0 0 1.0

captainslow 1265

Come on down to Orkmont Beach, where the Greyjoy bannermen are hot, hot, hot! Tentacles make me randy! Take your top off, Aeron!

I whipped up this steamy pile just before our latest local tournament in Portsmouth, NH. It went 4-0 on the day, and since there are exactly zero Greyjoy Summer decks posted, I thought I would share the list with you jerks.

I've been playing a ton of Greyjoy Winter (some thoughts here). I've found that it is very inconsistent. When Wafers in the Mist does work and I can keep the boards small, it's good. Otherwise, meh.

But I really wanted to play Greyjoy, as the prize for the tournament was a custom set of GJ power tokens, and my girlfriend had created this awesomeness as a participation prize:

chibi kraken

Quick aside: this is the second in a series of house cards we're giving out at our monthly tournaments. Wait until you see what she's done for Lannister next month... If you're in the neighborhood of NH, you should totally come play! Our meta is growing rapidly.

Anyway, wanted to pay tribute to our favorite wet and sexy pirates, but Winter felt like a glass cannon, Fealty is boring, and Crossing is not my preferred playstyle. I was expecting a bunch of chilly choke decks, so I settled on throwing an Iron Island beach party to counter them.

The premise was to poop out big squids, draw cards, play a longer, more defensive game, and win power challenges all day long. I wanted to keep my well-endowed raiders away from Cowardice and Drugs, and win the game post-Wildfire.

Some card choice thoughts:

-No go-first stuff because I don't have the initiative to justify it. And going second is really nice as GJ because if your opponent isn't careful, you gain power SO FAST.

-1x Mance because he's a big sexy tricon with renown, and you can often pay for him with Summer plots.

-1x Newly-Made Lord in case I want to Summon him and blow up a tree

-2x Support of the People and 1x a bunch of locations because I am a sucker for a well-stocked toolbox.

On to the big bash! We had 12 folks turn up this month. Down from our 20 last month, but still an improvement from our meta of 3-4 months ago (which consisted of me and a red-bearded bear named Mike).

ROUND 1 - Stephen "You Can't" Cope "With My Skills", Targaryen Summer

Stephen is an awesome, diligent player who has won a bunch of events around Boston and NH recently. Watch out!

He set up with dragons and assorted chuds. I had Asha and a Shipwright. We both opened Calm, worrying about dual Summer Harvest. I dropped Euron to his "more chuds." I had to play around Dracarys! first turn, and things were pretty even. I did, crucially, pull a Put to the Sword with Euron's meaty intrigue challenge. Turn two, I misplayed Summer Harvest, hitting Stephen's Counting Coppers. I dropped the Reader and fed him to a Dracarys!!!!! This freed up Asha for use. Euron did more work, starting a chain of grabbing Kingsroads and pillaging Crown of Gold (that would have hurt, next turn!). From there, I was mostly playing defensively and letting Stephen build up his wall of chuds. I think he had to kill five characters when Wildfire hit. Unfortunately for him, he never saw Dany or Drogo, even though he drew a ton of cards throughout the game (12 reserve? Yeah buddy!). Without a big body on the other side of the board, the latter turns were much easier.

Dodged lots of bullets in this one! Lucky intrigue pulls, lucky pillages, and no Dany.

W, 1-0

ROUND 2 - Zeb "McCool" McGill. Lanni Kraken

Zeb was a big fan of the Conquest LCG. Sad times :(. Still, he seemed in as good of spirits as he always does!

He was even laughing when he set up Ser Ilyn Pain and a Scouting Vessel. Luckily for him, I wasn't running Marched. Given his small board, I shifted into military pressure mode. Only drawing all three of his Iron Mines kept him in the game. That, and I again guessed wrong with Summer Harvest, and hit Summer Harvest. But, I was simply too far ahead by the time he was able to establish any board presence. Curiously, neither of us drew a single economy card until the 4th plot of the game.

Zeb's build was pretty neat. He ran a lot of high-initiative plots to go with his Longships and Cersei's Wheelhouse. He finished in 2nd, so way to go, Zeb!

w, 2-0

ROUND 3 - "Magister" Ian H., Tyrell Summer

Ian manages our FLGS, but he was off for the day and able to play! He's a cool dude and he does a fantastic job organizing our events. Thanks, Ian!

I was feeling pretty good about things after my challenges, but then Ian hit Balon with a Tears. Was not expecting that! Turn two, I played Close Call to move Balon and set up an eventual Summons. Ian was out to a big lead in board presence. Queen of Thorns provided about 18 gold of value over this game, so I was just doing everything I could to keep the power totals from getting away from me. Turn three, I misplayed Summer Harvest AGAIN, hitting Tourney for the King. Ian shot up to 11 or so power with a bunch of renown. Wildfire kept him in check, but he was still left with Margaery, Randyll, and Queen of Thorns. He repopulated quickly, but I was able to Seastone Randyll with 3 power on him. That was obviously huge. Time was called just after going into our final round. Ian went first, and went for lots of renown, but I was able to keep him around ~12 power. He didn't have an answer for a resurrected Balon, whose unopposed power challenge shot me up to 15.

W, 3-0

ROUND 4, Brendan "Steward of Rimegate" C., Night's Watch Winter

Brendan set up a weird, sentient tree that kept pickpocketing me!

This was a very grindy affair. I managed to get Balon and Asha and Littlefinger out, versus his swarm of bodies. Things felt very even for 3 plots. I was winning every power challenge, but he had board position. I kept needing 1 more gold to afford Euron, who would have broken the game open, I think. Eventually, Euron got pulled for intrigue claim. I'm definitely to blame, as I AGAIN guessed wrong, and hit Counting Coppers with fuck this card (I was expecting Building Orders). Post-Wildfire, the boards were much more even, but my power challenge advantage let me out-rush Brendan to victory. Key factor in this game was his total lack of Cowards and Drugs. I was holding Rattleshirts and We Do Not Sow for them, but it would have been interesting nonetheless.

W, 4-0

So I won some store credit and sweet Greyjoy tokens from Broken Egg! Love me some hawt summer squid swag.

Thoughts on the deck:

-I suck at playing Summer Harvest and I'm very tempted to play another Song of Summer instead.

-The Scouts, Syrio, and Pyke all felt a little redundant, especially in this build. I would probably drop Syrio for another Littlefinger or Reader

-I loved this attachment package. It felt right all day. Milk to eat a confiscation, and then Seal can go to town for you.

-This deck will get better with a couple more high-end Greyjoy characters. Looking at you, Chintarion 2.0.

-I'm still tinkering with the attachment removal stuff. Rattleshirts, We Do Not Sow, and Confiscation are all well and good, but it's also a lot of potentially dead cards.

PROPS:

-Diversions for being a wonderful FLGS

-The burgeoning Portsmouth meta

-The experience of playing each of my opponents, which I would even compare favorably to eating fried calamari with a cold lager at sunset

-Jimmy for going 3-1 with a deck he calls "Ladies and Eunuchs"

SLOPS:

-Me

-Me

-Self-deprecating humor

Post Script: If you like reading my stupid little write-ups, give this a heart or whatever so I know to keep doing them.

If ever there were a deck that could run Dagmer Cleftjaw, it's Greyjoy/Summer. So I'm glad to see he wasn't even splashable here.

captainslow 1265

@hattrickflyer Yeah... it's sad that Mance is better.

Great write up and great playing with you, as always. I look forward to the next time! I'm glad I timed my lowest gold plot against your Summer Harvest after we double Calmed. You could always run 2! Congrats.

@hattrickflyerI built a pretty interesting deck with Dagmer and I bet it is not what you were expecting at all! thronesdb.com

Love reading your reports, dude - thank you!

Always love the write ups. Congrats on the win! LK

@captainslowanother great read. I absolutely love them, so keep them coming. and for the deck itself - I like the idea of singleton locations paired with couple of Support of the People cards. I definitely have to try it. I always go with the 2-3 krakens and 2-3 chairs, which makes my deckbuilding less flexible.

imabunneh 361

Yo how can I get my hands on the full set of Chibi cards once they're drawn up? I can't come to America for them :(

captainslow 1265

@imabunneh I'll absolutely make sets available when they're complete!

Maenas 1

interested in those sets too ;) Oh and fun and great writeup!

Itsapaul 1

Do you find the Shipwright super useful? I've played it at 2 completely non-competitively and he rarely has anything to do, but I also ran every location-destruction under the sun...

captainslow 1265

@ItsapaulSome games he's just a cheap intrigue icon, which isn't bad in Greyjoy. Other times, he'll lock down a Ghaston or Raiding Longship and win you a game. I don't know many other 2-cost characters who straight-up win you games.

Isian.H 706

I think you might need more than one seastone or great kraken I found that whenever I was able to play Support of the People the great kraken was stuck in hand and couldn't play it and most games seastone was already out despite being a 1 of. But if it gets intrigued out of hand then I won't be able to play it and support becomes kind of a dead card too ish. Can still fetch kingsroad and mines I guess

captainslow 1265

@Isian.H I agree that there could be one more Great Kraken. It's vital to the way this deck likes to play. That said, it's usually worth it to pay 3 gold and not have it hit for intrigue. I'm not worried about extra copies of Seastone. Some games it's dead, and it's almost never a problem to pay 1 for it. It's not going to get hit for intrigue.

This deck played well for me against a Stark/Fealty today. I only have one extra Milk right now, so I threw in another Theon and Kraken. Rattleshirts helped with removing Milk from Balon and Theon....those two with Asha took it down at the end for me without about 4 power on an unopposed power challenge.

captainslow 1265

@artyzipp Glad it worked for you! It can close a game in an instant if you're set up and in that 9-10 power range.

I'm currently trying this with:

-2 We Do Not Sow, - 1 Syrio, -1 Summer Festival

+1 Great Kraken, +1 Nightmares, +1 Littlefinger, +1 Song of Summer
