Unexpected Delay can be a nasty surprise for many decks if you build your deck around this card.

Round 1: You open Unexpected Delay, protect all your 2-4 characters (16 !) and return 1 key character to your opponent's hand (2 if you win initiative: possible against A Noble Cause and Summons, or with some luck or a Kingsroad also against Building Orders and Wraiths in Their Midst). Clear the opponent's board with Marched to the Wall or repeat Unexpected Delay.

Unexpected Delay doesn't provide much income, so you need cheap characters. This goes well together with the Knight deck archetype. Knight decks like attachments, which you need to protect your characters anyway (Mare in Heat, Knighted), and Ladies. Both and have cheap Lady and Knight characters as well as great attachments which fit right into this strategy (Mare in Heat and Ward), so I pair these 2 factions together.

As a player, I play this with Tyrell as my main faction. Tyrell offers The Arbor and Lady-in-Waiting, which both help with your weak economy in the beginning. And this way, Ocean Road is more effective with more eligible targets. Out of Stark, you can play Catelyn Stark (Core) (obviously great with Brienne of Tarth), but apart from Sansa Stark (WotN) the other interesting loyal cards like Ice are too expensive. Maybe it's possible with Fealty.

Main strategy is keeping the opponent's board small throughout the game and steadily gaining power:

Weaknesses:

  • The First Snow of Winter hits you hard, but duplicates (3x of your 3-cost Ladies + Arya's free duplicate + Lady-in-Waiting) and Septa Mordane with Arya provide some protection.
  • The opponent may get lucky and draw a Bodyguard or duplicate for his Tywin. You still have a chance to get him down to 1 character which can get marched or strip away the duplicate to play Valar.
  • Ambush, but at least you will clear the characters that got played before (looking at Tyrion here). There's also 2x Last Hearth Scouts.

Plots:

Let me know what you think! :-)

Very nice idea ! I also like a lot your analysis! Big thumbs up!

Noble lineage doesn't make sense to me while ur playing house's with a lot of pow icons, I suppose it's free but it's space could be something better

I love this idea. Thanks for creating and sharing your deck @Diomedes.

Another option might be Tyrell Banner of the Stag. There are some cheap ladies (and Mel). House Florent Knight also synergies with Unexpected Delay if played at the right time.

Cyggie 2

Whoops... I meant Vanguard Lancer the original Florent Knight.

Thanks for your comments!

@Gbaeby: Noble Lineage is just what you need on round 1: a free attachment. It's just for protection. I started playing 1x Noble Lineage and 3x Green Dreams, but non-terminal can be important. With the lack of draw in this deck, I am actually leaning back to 3x Green Dreams.

@Cyggie: Vanguard Lancer can be a really great surprise, especially if you go second and your opponent thinks he doesn't need to protect his big guy. Thanks for the idea! Will try to build a Banner of deck focussing more on than .

Cyggie 2

@Gbaeby The one advantage to Noble Lineage is that nearly every faction's reducer character already has a power icon. Just throw it on your opponent's character and force them to have to choose someone more important with Unexpected Delay. Then when the chump get's claimed you can do it again!

I made the following changes to this deck:

  • +1 Green Dreams +2 Harrenhal (GoH)
  • −1 Noble Lineage −1 Ser Horas Redwyne −1 Last Hearth Scouts

`@CyggieThat's another great use. The main problem is that you have to be second player for most of these tricks. Pretty difficult with Initiative 1. Maybe Banner of the Kraken (Ahead of the Tide, Salty Navigator, Drowned God's Blessing) can help. I want to test a deck with this banner (more locations than characters, a lot Stealth, a lot of saves). I'll publish this deck if it goes well. :-)

Great deck, @Diomedes. I played it in a small league tourney tonight and went 3-0 against Targ/Fealty, GJ/Fealty, and a far less janky Tyrell/Wolf.

This deck is SO much fun, and I'm pretty sure it would remain effective even if your opponent has faced it before (no-one is building their decks to counter this one).

Thanks for sharing. :D

Diomedes 3294

@doobleg That's great! :-)

Would you propose any changes?

doobleg 15

@DiomedesThe deck's pretty tight, man:

  • the plots you've chosen are all on point
  • I wouldn't ditch Ser Horas, as he works great with Sansa and Marg (even with Arya, as she can oppose a stealth conflict, then stand to get stealth power/mil)
  • if anything, I think maybe Harrenhall was the only thing out of place in this deck. Even if The Arbor comes out, economy is still lacking, and putting bodies on the field post-Unexpected can be tough if you're drawing/playing Harrenhall. I like it at one copy, but I'd be reluctant to put in more.

Still, you clearly know what you're doing. Let us know how you go with those tweaks. :)

@DiomedesI have have one question with unexpected delay : can u choose the same character as ur opponent ? Because if yes, it doesnt seem that good - with only 1 init - you will probably never go 2nd and will return only 1 char.

Diomedes 3294

@doobleg Thanks!

  • I'm not sure the Lady characters are good enough to justify Ser Horas's cost, especially with the tight economy.
  • I think you're right about Harrenhal (GoH) in that you can't afford it without an Arbor setup. I'm leaning towards fewer characters and more locations because I was struggling to get the perfect start (all of your characters protected, opponent's 6/7-coster without duplicate or Bodyguard) lately.
  • Was card draw an issue? There's not a single source of card draw in this deck, only Green Dreams for scrying.

@brainuYes, you can choose the same character. As I wrote, I'm trying to build a / deck that can consistently win initiative with Unexpected (Ahead of the Tide, Salty Navigator, Drowned God's Blessing + Kingsroads). I think this deck will be more effective than /:

I'm still tweaking this deck, but it is looking good with only 19 characters at the moment.

I try the deck yesterday in a little tournament of 12 people, at the end i brought home a good result 3-1. I won against a Lanni/Wolf, NIght's Watch/Sun and a Stark/Tyrell but i lose against Martell Fealty because i haven't seen economy for all the 6 plots and also bad luck with Unexpected Delay The only things that i have changed are Ser Horas Redwyne for The Knight of Flowers and one less Bodyguard, and also your change in the other comment. Anyway i really love play this deck and it's really funny. Great job ;)

I3eastMode1050 1

I love the deck idea & i think it is a solid build! Me & my buddy have been trying to get a 2x unexpected deck to work consistently, but have had no luck. This really opened my eyes when it came to dealing with the economy factor. thank you for the post, and let us know if any other inspiration hits! :D

(Also, just had a question pop into mind.... Have you thought about tourney for the king? Just as another game closer/power rush after you have cleared their board & stabilized your own with tons of cheapo-knights.)

I3eastMode1050 1

disregard that question.... i just got done reading your post again. XD Im gonna try play-testing this for our upcoming tourney. Gonna make a couple minor changes to see how it works out. (-1 House Florent + 1 Ed Tully & swapping Harrenhal for Riverrun, just to see how those work out... Although i believe the deck is as tight as its gonna get with the way you've got it now) I'll post up my results as well just to add more info after the tourney!

Diomedes 3294

@MrPink10Glad you enjoy it! :-)

@I3eastMode1050 Thanks! Ser Edmure Tully may very well be a worthy addition to this deck. He makes the second Unexpected hit harder. Good idea! Riverrun has imo too few targets with only the 3 Minstrels, though.

Which other factions did you guys try? I'm toying with /Winter and /. Ahead of the Tide is the perfect card for this deck. You can't expect your opponent to open A Noble Cause all the time. :-D

TheBrianFactor 7

I love this deck - it's super fun to play and it's hard to beat unless your opponent has built, specifically, to beat it. I have, however, made the following changes to have a more broad character base and to solve the econ/card draw issues:

-1 House Florent Knight, -1 Ser Horas Redwyne, -1 Harrenhal (GoH); +1 The Knight of Flowers, +2 Pleasure Barge, +1 Ser Edmure Tully

RoflRoy 22

@TheBrianFactor So you are the guy who beat me so badly yesterday? ^^ (GJ Crossing)

TheBrianFactor 7

Haha no. Haven't played this deck on OCTGN or anything yet. Maybe someone took my changes and used them?

RoflRoy 22

Maybe ^^ It was brutal... Warded Theon and Unexpected Delay on two of my Characters. It was basically over after the first 5 minutes.

Diomedes 3294

Thank you for all your likes and comments! :-)

I have published a new Unexpected deck: thronesdb.com Check it out! :-)

America 166

I used this deck to finish 2nd at a 22 man SC. Pretty good deck, sir.

Diomedes 3294

@America That's awesome! Congrats, man! Did everything work as planned?
