Unexpected Delay can be a nasty surprise for many decks if you build your deck around this card.
Round 1: You open Unexpected Delay, protect all your 2-4 characters (16 !) and return 1 key character to your opponent's hand (2 if you win initiative: possible against A Noble Cause and Summons, or with some luck or a Kingsroad also against Building Orders and Wraiths in Their Midst). Clear the opponent's board with Marched to the Wall or repeat Unexpected Delay.
Unexpected Delay doesn't provide much income, so you need cheap characters. This goes well together with the Knight deck archetype. Knight decks like attachments, which you need to protect your characters anyway (Mare in Heat, Knighted), and Ladies. Both and have cheap Lady and Knight characters as well as great attachments which fit right into this strategy (Mare in Heat and Ward), so I pair these 2 factions together.
As a player, I play this with Tyrell as my main faction. Tyrell offers The Arbor and Lady-in-Waiting, which both help with your weak economy in the beginning. And this way, Ocean Road is more effective with more eligible targets. Out of Stark, you can play Catelyn Stark (Core) (obviously great with Brienne of Tarth), but apart from Sansa Stark (WotN) the other interesting loyal cards like Ice are too expensive. Maybe it's possible with Fealty.
Main strategy is keeping the opponent's board small throughout the game and steadily gaining power:
- Valar Morghulis, 2x Unexpected Delay, Marched to the Wall, 3x Ward, and 2x House Florent Knight decimate the opponent's board before the challenges phase even begins.
- Therefore you should get a lot of unopposed challenges.
- 9 Ladies and 13 Knights (+2 Knighted) provide the base for Lady Sansa's Rose.
- Passive power gain with Sansa Stark (Core), Riverrun Minstrel (who comes with a handy built-in protection against Unexpected Delay), Heads on Spikes, and Winter Festival.
- I played Brienne and Ser Loras at first, but if you can't rush to 15 power, they don't really support the deck idea.
Weaknesses:
- The First Snow of Winter hits you hard, but duplicates (3x of your 3-cost Ladies + Arya's free duplicate + Lady-in-Waiting) and Septa Mordane with Arya provide some protection.
- The opponent may get lucky and draw a Bodyguard or duplicate for his Tywin. You still have a chance to get him down to 1 character which can get marched or strip away the duplicate to play Valar.
- Ambush, but at least you will clear the characters that got played before (looking at Tyrion here). There's also 2x Last Hearth Scouts.
Plots:
- Fallen from Favor is great to sacrifice a warded character before their Confiscation hits. Edge case: Amazing opener for a The Arbor/Harrenhal (GoH) setup! :-D
- Marched to the Wall is even better suited to follow up a Ward round, great as a second plot to wipe the opponent's board.
- Heads on Spikes may hit an important character you unexpectedly bounced back to your opponent's hand.
- Valar Morghulis works great with this deck idea and your ultra-protected Ladies. I was playing A Tourney for the King first, but this was a win-more plot card that got replaced by Valar.
- Winter Festival accelerates the power rush.
Let me know what you think! :-)

Noble lineage doesn't make sense to me while ur playing house's with a lot of pow icons, I suppose it's free but it's space could be something better |
I love this idea. Thanks for creating and sharing your deck @Diomedes. Another option might be Tyrell Banner of the Stag. There are some cheap ladies (and Mel). House Florent Knight also synergies with Unexpected Delay if played at the right time. |
Whoops... I meant Vanguard Lancer the original Florent Knight. |
Thanks for your comments!

I made the following changes to this deck:

Great deck, This deck is SO much fun, and I'm pretty sure it would remain effective even if your opponent has faced it before (no-one is building their decks to counter this one). Thanks for sharing. :D |
Would you propose any changes? |
Still, you clearly know what you're doing. Let us know how you go with those tweaks. :) |
|
I'm still tweaking this deck, but it is looking good with only 19 characters at the moment. |
I try the deck yesterday in a little tournament of 12 people, at the end i brought home a good result 3-1. I won against a Lanni/Wolf, NIght's Watch/Sun and a Stark/Tyrell but i lose against Martell Fealty because i haven't seen economy for all the 6 plots and also bad luck with Unexpected Delay The only things that i have changed are Ser Horas Redwyne for The Knight of Flowers and one less Bodyguard, and also your change in the other comment. Anyway i really love play this deck and it's really funny. Great job ;) |
I love the deck idea & i think it is a solid build! Me & my buddy have been trying to get a 2x unexpected deck to work consistently, but have had no luck. This really opened my eyes when it came to dealing with the economy factor. thank you for the post, and let us know if any other inspiration hits! :D (Also, just had a question pop into mind.... Have you thought about tourney for the king? Just as another game closer/power rush after you have cleared their board & stabilized your own with tons of cheapo-knights.) |
disregard that question.... i just got done reading your post again. XD Im gonna try play-testing this for our upcoming tourney. Gonna make a couple minor changes to see how it works out. (-1 House Florent + 1 Ed Tully & swapping Harrenhal for Riverrun, just to see how those work out... Although i believe the deck is as tight as its gonna get with the way you've got it now) I'll post up my results as well just to add more info after the tourney! |
Which other factions did you guys try? I'm toying with /Winter and /. Ahead of the Tide is the perfect card for this deck. You can't expect your opponent to open A Noble Cause all the time. :-D |
I love this deck - it's super fun to play and it's hard to beat unless your opponent has built, specifically, to beat it. I have, however, made the following changes to have a more broad character base and to solve the econ/card draw issues: -1 House Florent Knight, -1 Ser Horas Redwyne, -1 Harrenhal (GoH); +1 The Knight of Flowers, +2 Pleasure Barge, +1 Ser Edmure Tully |

Haha no. Haven't played this deck on OCTGN or anything yet. Maybe someone took my changes and used them? |
Maybe ^^ It was brutal... Warded Theon and Unexpected Delay on two of my Characters. It was basically over after the first 5 minutes. |
Thank you for all your likes and comments! :-) I have published a new Unexpected deck: thronesdb.com Check it out! :-) |
I used this deck to finish 2nd at a 22 man SC. Pretty good deck, sir. |

Very nice idea ! I also like a lot your analysis! Big thumbs up!
