As the defending champion of 2016's Store Champion in Dueller's Point, I am humbled and proud that i have successfully defended my title.

Last year I took the championship with my trusty beloved Venisun (Bara-Sun) ultra control deck. This year I went back to my roots of good old Bara Fealty. As a Bara loyalist since the beginning of the game, despite the deck still being 80% core set, I've not had this much fun in a long while.

The name of this deck Hougangisthefury is dedicated to Dueller's Point which is located in a town called Hougang in Singapore. As I seem to have affinity to this location, along with the Bara vs Bara finals, it has been deemed that Hougang truly is the Fury.

This ties back to the MVP card of the deck. Ours is the Fury. A core but extremely potent card that was on the back of my mind throughout my entire deck building process. WIth the potency of "The Rains of Castamere" and Baratheon domination, Ours is the Fury deals with the kneeling from rival Baratheons, blocking "The Rains of Castamere" triggers, and even if they do get to trigger rains and use Filthy Accusations, Ours is the Fury is still there to get my knelt character back up.

With that, lets get into the tournament summary.

Game 1: Targ Fealty (Jason)

Right off the bat, I'm faced against my fellow teammate from Valyrian Steel, Jason. Having played against me a couple of weeks ago, he has already noticed my inclusion of Ours is the Fury. He managed to use The Hand's Judgment on my seen in flames and a single Ours is the Fury which tilted my strategy. However Chamber of the Painted Table managed to equalize my power grab. Last challenge phase before time was called, I managed to pull off my second Ours is the Fury, allowing Robert Baratheon to stand, and retaliate for the win.

Game 2: Tyrell Banner Dragon (Chun Yong)

Chun Yong was playing a really interesting deck combination revolving around The Eyrie. His Randyll Tarly was pretty decked out with Crown of Golden Roses along with Renly's Pavilion and Margaery Tyrell (Core) making him pretty much impossible to deal with as my kneel mechanics wont do anything against him. The inclusion of Mirri Maz Duur with the strength boost made it extremely challenging to keep him at bay. However, i managed to get Robert Baratheon Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) and Selyse Baratheon out to give intrigue icons out to everyone to control Mirri Maz Duur. The highlight of this game would go to the Fickle Bannerman who went back and forth between us at least 3 times each. However I managed to snatch him back and close the game with 2 power on him.

Game 3: Tyrell Alliance Wolf and Lion (Shawn)

I had an extremely bad setup starring down at Ser Ilyn Payne. Shawn then marshaled Harrenhal (FFH) and Eddard Stark (WotN). I managed to draw Melisandre (Core) and get his Eddard Stark (WotN) knelt. Challenge phase he dropped Ser Gregor Clegane with Harrenhal (FFH) but fortunately missing with his pillage. I did what i could with chuds and Melisandre (Core) and seeing the Ser Gregor Clegane die to Harrenhal (FFH) was not a happy sight for me as i kinda knew what to expect with Shawn by now. And true enough he played Ghosts of Harrenhal to bring Ser Gregor Clegane back. Now the game of counters begin, Shawn Treachery on Melisandre (Core) to prevent Ser Gregor Clegane from kneeling. He then used Harrenhal (FFH) to drop Roose Bolton attempting to kill Melisandre (Core), fortunately for me i had Nightmares which led to Roose Bolton dying at the end of the phase. I started to recover from the initial aggression as Shawn was starting to run out of steam from a 75 card deck.

Game 4: Baratheon Fealty Mirror Match (Ling Hong / Silent Sister)

Me being the Baratheon representative of Team Valyrian Steel facing Ling Hong who is the Baratheon representative of Team Silent Sisters has been long over due. But Bara mirror matches can really come down to luck of who draws the key pieces 1st. Fortunately for me, i had the red god's favour and managed to set up the The Red Keep right off the bat. On the first plot, our mirror match was 95% identical, we both had king stannis, both had a reducer, both had Edric Storm, the only difference was her Lightbringer vs my The Red Keep. However The Red Keep proved to be too much to handle, being able to trigger it's ability every turn allowed me to flood and dominate the board from the very start, allowing me to close the game without much difficulty. However, this round was won purely based on luck on my side with the The Red Keep setup, and Ling Hong not being able to draw hers nor any other key pieces.

Top 8: Greyjoy Rains ( Jeannette / Silent Sister)

Facing another Silent Sister back to back, Jeannette was our Singapore Open Champion of 2016 and is the Silent Sister's Greyjoy representative. Facing her for the first time, I knew I had to be careful even though I don't normally have any problems against Greyjoy. Her double Iron Fleet Scout along with an Appointed Balon Greyjoy (Core) proved troublesome. I had a horrible setup and initial hand, consisting of mostly events and locations. I was desperate enough to attach Disputed Claim and Lightbringer onto Gendry, making him into a mini Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) of some sort. The turning point of the match was an unopposed challenge Jeannette was throwing against me, i had 3x Seen In Flames in my hand, after using 1 i noticing she has 2x We Do Not Sow, forced me to use my 2nd Seen In Flames to protect my Chamber of the Painted Table. Doing that resulted in thinning her hand, and prevented losing my only stabilizing power source from the Chamber of the Painted Table. Soon after, Robert Baratheon hit the table and with a key Nightmares on Balon Greyjoy (Core) after using Power Behind the Throne combined with Ours is the Fury. I managed to close the game.

Top 4: Stark Fealty (Kim Tian)

Stark Fealty used to be a real problem for me, but that was when i used to play Stannis Baratheon (Core). I had an opening hand of Robert Baratheon and Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) and decided to open with A Noble Cause. We tied for initiate but i won the dice roll, and mistakenly made him to go 1st. He dropped Harrenhal (GoH) and that made my heart skip a beat. I was forced to play City Watch instead and lose out on my A Noble Cause 2 cost reduction bonus. Plot 2, I made myself go 1st this time. Drawing Melisandre (Core) and playing her made Kim Tian panic, and triggered Harrenhal (GoH). however, because I'm going first, i got to trigger Melisandre (Core) and kneel out one of his character's first before her dying. Once that was out of the way, turn after turn, Robert Baratheon came down along with Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) the next turn. I even managed to intimidate his Robb Stark (Core) attached with Ice and confiscated it the next turn. Closed the game with A Feast for Crows, Chamber of the Painted Table and Gendry.

Finals: Baratheon Fealty Mirror Rematch (Ling Hong / Silent Sister)

This was a very very different game from our swiss face off. The red god decided to show it's favour to my opponent this time. The first 2 plots of the game were rather similar on both sides, my only advantage was that i had Melisandre (Core) and Chamber of the Painted Table before Ling Hong. We yet again both had Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) on the table, which caused -2 power for both of us. I managed to get a few early unopposed challenges and taking dom, allowing me a quick boost in power in the first 2 plots. Everything changed however in plot 3, when she dropped Robert Baratheon, and soon after triggering Support of the People to bring out The Red Keep. Plot 4, she dropped Lightbringer on robert and in plot 5, Melisandre (Core). I had only Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) and Melisandre (Core) from the beginning of the game up till this point. Everything was against me since plot 3. I managed to squeeze out 10 power up till plot 3, but came out empty in plot 4. Robert Baratheon was becoming a beast due to the size of the board and i could not afford to Wildfire Assault as her Robert Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) and Melisandre (Core) was more impactful then my Stannis Baratheon (TIMC), Melisandre (Core) and City Watch. I opened A Feast for Crows as it was my only other option vs Wildfire Assault or A Noble Cause. I had no faith that i would have won dom that turn. The entire game came down to what happened in plot 5. I passed all my challenges as I was going first. Ling Hong then swung a power challenge with Robert Baratheon and Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) which led to my Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) being intimidated. If she had just passed challenges there and then, she would have won dominance, and would have likely closed the game on me the next plot. However, she swung with a military challenge with Robert Baratheon and Gendry. With much careful calculation (because bob is a fat math problem) and with the miracle of Ours is the Fury, I managed to barely but successfully defend the military challenge, and stand my Stannis Baratheon (TIMC). At this point, i was going to win dom regardless, but because she had Edric Storm, she decided to throw in another intrigue challenge, of which if i had defended, would tie us for dominance. But luckily for me, i had a 2nd Ours is the Fury, using my City Watch to defend and stand, sealing my victory in dominance and gaining me 4 power. I was now 1 power from winning, but i was not out of the woods yet. Plot 6, she opened a Wildfire Assault vs my A Noble Cause and decided to go first. Now it was all about the next 2 cards i drew that would decide my fate. I prayed to the red god to grant me his blessing once more, and he gave me a Fiery Followers. Dropped that Fiery Followers, knelt Robert Baratheon, full block her power challenge, gave her unopposed intrigue, gave her unopposed military, passed my challenges in fear of her Ours is the Fury and won this crazy game.

I was glad to have this rematch against Ling Hong, our first game in swiss was not as satisfying, and this rematch really brought out the intensity of what would normally be a boring bara vs bara.

I would like to thank Dueller's Point for hosting the SC, Chewy Quah for being our TO for the day, Team Valyrian Steel for their support and everyone else who came to participate.

Congratulations on your win! In the Top8 match, you mention Power Behind the Throne, but I do not see it in the deck list. Did you play a different plot deck, or is this a mistake in the match summary?

iTrvis 371

@AegonTargaryenAh, i can understand the confusion. What i meant to say was my opponent used Power Behind the Throne to stand Balon Greyjoy (Core) after which i used Nightmares on Balon Greyjoy (Core) followed by a Ours is the Fury to defend the following challenge. Hope this clarifies things!

congrats on the win!! just a question why confiscation and not here to serve??

iTrvis 371

@ThronesGirlPTI was debating on whether or not to use Confiscation vs Here to Serve vs Summons as my source of attachment removal. Here to Serve has it's perks of bringing old man Maester Cressen wherever he is, but it has also back fired on me as well, I have drawn both Maester Cressen and Maester Pylos on setup and after mulligan before, and it kinda left a sour feeling between me and the plot. After much consideration, I feel that i made the right decision of using Confiscation instead, during this SC my Confiscation was used on my opponents Ice, Lightbringer and Crown of Golden Roses which is the flexibility i prefer. Of course Here to Serve is awesome to help refill my board after a Valar Morghulis or Wildfire Assault, but Milk of the Poppy and Craven are not as prominent in my meta at the moment.

Stannis Baratheon (TIMC)? wow. So how does that work out with the deck over someone like Selmy?

iTrvis 371

@Samurai7 Stannis Baratheon (TIMC) is amazing. The -1 Str for power seems underwhelming but is extremely powerful. You wanna win dominance anyway and so his ability triggers most of the time, you can keep stuff like Eddard Stark (WotN), Mirri Maz Duur, Tyrion Lannister (Core) and even Maester Aemon (Core) knelt which is awesome. I never liked Ser Barristan Selmy (TS) as he is easily played around and you can't reduce him with fealty. He ain't a lord so you can't attach Bodyguard either.

Samurai7 1

@iTrvis Good points. I'd planned to just make a deck for him but this has me wanting to start now. Any changes you would have made, Summer agenda, milk?

iTrvis 371

@Samurai7I never really liked playing KOS bara, never liked restricting myself to summer plots. If you really wanna slot Milk of the Poppy you could drop Disputed Claim and 1x Bodyguard for them i guess.

Samurai7 1

@iTrvisNot gonna lie, this may be my favorite Bara Fealty deck, all that needs to happen now is we get Renly for Bara that doesn't suck. Super Baratheon Bros!

I've been looking for a fun Bara deck and this looks really good. Any changes with recent cards? Spears of the Merling King looks great but I don't know what could be cut.
