I'm releasing what I currently feel is the closest to a 2.0 list for the Night Gathers deck. Took it today to the Road to Fracas (Sofia) tournament and finished 3rd ( out of 14 people ).

The deck would land in the middle of Tier 1.5. It can beat anything, you just need to practice with it a lot as it's very unforgiving on misplays.

A few comments about the deck:

  • Perhaps the largest diviation you will see is the inclusion of Valar Morghulis. While I was very against this plot for the deck ( I still sort of am ), in the last days of my testing there were some games where my opponents were running away with it and I was like " damn, I could've Valared this ". I would say it fits the current list, but I don't think it's a permanent inclusion ( the way Marched or FFF are). The problem is that, compared to the non-Valar version, it slows the tempo so damn much. I had 2 games, where literally for 5 turns we had no more than 1 character on board at the end of the round.

The bottom line here is: if you run a version of this deck that is strong on control ( lot of events, junky/clunky steals, Last Giant into Varys ) you should run Valar. If you run my type of deck, with ~30+ chars and strong tempo plays, I'd very much prefer to have another good winter plot ( that hasn't come out yet). To be frank, witht he 3rd chapter pack, perhaps Duel > Valar Morghulis. I just haven't tested at all, as it wasn't legal for the tournament.

  • The Frostfangs were about to be cut minutes before the tournament, because in my last 10 or so games I never saw them, or too late. Still, stick to my guts and I knew I put them there for a reason and they pulled out 1 game for sure and helped immensely in 2 others. Right number is a bit difficult to nail down, but it's 2 or 3 for sure.

  • Isle of Ravens is gone as you don't need to recycle events with your The Annals of Castle Black in plot deck. You could recycle a random discard Varys, but this is minor tuning.

  • Littlefinger = Good inclusion. Fixes some Icon distribution and can give you cards when you need them. Also reduced by Ocean Road and Great Hall

  • Guarding the Realm. Despite me giving this card a hard time, it end up great as a 1x.

  • Old Bear Mormont (WotW) = total trash. It's now 20 games for me where he didn't steal a single unit. Literally NO REASON this to not be a second Qhorin Halfhand

If you are willing to explore this deck further ( with 3rd chapter pack out ) I'd recommend testing Underground Vault. I think is a Tier 1 card for any Wall deck. However, for the Night Gathers deck .... it's a tough call. I feel it needs a lot of testing. The 2 cost is very unfriendly for setup and it doesn't give you the explosion which The Kingsroad gives ( for the turn where you need them). It's a very solid card, but maybe not for this deck.

I'd recommend either taking out 3x The Roseroad or the Ocean Road + Great Hall and start testing from there.

Also Duel!

Cheers, Dydra

Really love your KoW decks! Did you ever considered The Dragon's Tail? (especially with Annals in the plotdeck) Thanks!

Dydra 1494

@gazgoblin yes. The other local resident NW player in our meta runs steal deck with it. While I think it can be amazing in terms of feeding you cards and can clusterfuck the opponent's hand, at the same time it gives them card quality.

That means that maybe they will discard 2-4 cards more, but the 2 cards they have left in hand will be better.

I personally don't like this, as it provides higher comeback potential for the opponent. On the other hand, our friend, runs wild with it. :) Up to preference to be honest.

Thanks for answering! Is it just me or Ser Jaremy Rykker could be another Wildling Horde (I don't see too many Rangers in the deck).

Dydra 1494

@gazgoblin not quite. For any deck the curve is very important, but especially if you are running The First Snow of Winter yourself.

4 cost is kinda the golden spot for the deck right now. Maybe the new economy in chapter pack 3 will be great ( Underground Vault ) and will allow for more 5 drops, but right now you would want at least 6x 4-costers in your deck.

Also Old Forest Hunter with a Pow icon is just value and the extra power Icons on Ranging Party, Benjen Stark, Qhorin Halfhand won't hurt in the Martell match-up either =)

Hi! I m testing a very close version. I feel blackwater bay essential against dupes pre valar or varys. I run also now my watch begins for the sweet combo with queenscrown. I have also 2 winter festival for gold and power gain i 'd prefer marched and spikes but i'd not have enough gold to deploy board...what do you think?

Dydra 1494

@Lohn it sounds like you are playing a different deck to me =D

Now My Watch Begins doesn't fit this deck exactly because of the combo with Queenscrown. It gives you the wrong mindset into holding 2 gold for Marshaling, or Saving your Queenscrown for then as well. You should be using that bad boy in plot phase prior draw ... this is consistency. Holding onto 2 gold and praying for luck is just clunky.

Battle of the Blackwater I had in previous versions. Sadly I'd get to use it in 1 out of 10 games. It fell off the list, especially with bombs like The Annals of Castle Black coming in. I feel it will slow the deck even further (making you waste 2 full turns to empty the board and then getting bodies in the dead pile). If your meta is full of Targ and Tyrell though might worth it, because they run tons of dupes, but I'd still not recommend it.

2x Winter Festival looks very solid, but it's just not for this deck. You don't attack their board, or hand ... which is what this deck is supposed to do. Not to setup your own army of dudes. =)

@Lohn I would like to give my 2 peaces of advise here. Now My Watch Begins is a completely different tool than the core of this deck. Queenscrown can utilize both approaches very well, but there is significant difference of how decks run with and without Now My Watch Begins. @Dydrais constantly feeding the discard pile as alternative to the Varys, while Now My Watch Begins is used as a tempo swing. Both aproches main goal is to deny the opponent of "character resource", but there is significant difference in mindset.

Do you think that with the addition of Flea Bottom to the game , a deck like this would become stronger in the meta?

Dydra 1494

@MythoS I've been playing rarely as of late ... preparing to move into L5R.

Considering this and reading the card, to me it seems the opposite. Flea Bottom will hurt the deck quite a lot, as the opponent will have a recycle engine for his chuds from their discard ( which u generally want to steal with Yoren and Guarding the Realm ).

.... you get my point :\
