Jousting Pavilion

First of all, thanks to Thorik and his meta partners for publishing this deck. Read their writeup, it explains the deck extremely well.

A lot of people asked me: why this deck? A few weeks ago at Dance I played Martell. I think the Martell board wipe deck is great, but I was just fatigued from having games go to 13-15 plots (and time), and then trying to race to dom and dig to find your remaining random characters. I wanted to play something that I could finish games relatively quickly (at least a few in under 30 minutes) and have some fun, and this looked like the ticket. I also was very fortunate in my pairings and my draws.

I will explain the few changes I made for the local meta, anticipating a few things I was concerned with. The rise of Varys decks (out of Martell, Watch, Tyrell) and the popularity of Targ led me to make some changes:

-Esgred: Targ is really popular around here, and 5 cost slot for a body that small, regardless of how good the ability is, is not superb. Also, against all the jumping challenge decks this is not superb either.

-2 Drowned Men: There aren't that may warships - while this can pump the priests too, with all the board wipes you're often not going to have enough out at once for this to be worth it.

-1 Sea Bitch: This deck has a fair amount of location hate - many of the locations you can either negate with Lordsport Shipwright or Newly-Made Lord anyway, and a temporary steal for one turn is often not enough against most of the big meta decks.

With that extra room I did:

+2 Bodyguard: Absolutely crucial. You need extra saves against Varys - the dupes are not reliable enough, and other than that you're very exposed.

+1 Black Wind's Crew: Instead of paying 4 for what is often a 3 body, pay 3. The extra location pillage doesn't hurt, and it's another possible target for the Dirk (not the best, but sometimes it's worth it).

+1 The Hand's Judgment: Running 1 meant after digging through the deck (sometimes going through my coppers and rains to copy theirs), I could often hold it for that crucial counter vs. Last Of the Giants or the key Drac. I would love to run 2, but there's just no room.

Losing those 2 extra guys did not really hurt, because if you see just them without any of the "trinity" (Balon, Euron, Vication) you're dead meat anyway. They will not hold a board against Tyrell, Targ, or Lanni - so more saves for the big guys ensuring they stick around was key.

For plots, I swapped out Calling the Banners for A Noble Cause since I have a lot of targets, and with all of the board wipes it was rare to see a board with more than 2-3 guys MAX on each side. Also gives you more options - you play Noble early, and then use Late Summer Feast to burst later on after drawing more cards and saves. Turned out to be the right call. Your mileage may vary in your local meta.

May you receive the Drowned God's blessing - and good luck if you choose to run this. I can't promise it's top tier, but it is hugely fun.

Well done sir, may the wiggling tentacles be with you.

Ps: calling the banners was in the plot deck to counter the Summer harvest and/or high initiative.

Thank you! Makes sense - Harvest is pretty unpopular in my area, and Targ, Watch, and Martell will make me first player most of the time regardless. I ended up playing vs. Targ and Watch 75% of my games ;).

Jools 46

And how You handle Baratheons? They Have kings, antivalar and kneel.

@Jools Regular Bara kneel is probably the worst matchup. Honestly it was just luck on my side that let me beat Bara in swiss, but you lose that 80%+ of the time. Offensive Valar can help some if they don't see the dupes/bodyguards. If I had to tweak it, I guess I would add Seals to stand a fighting chance - or maybe change the deck to banner Targ for Plaza of Pride. Still a bad matchup regardless.

Knight Of The Blackwater 136

Would you change the deck for the new army in the latest pack?
