Thai Rains of Joy (2nd Place, Siege of Meereen 2017) 2.0

I have been playing this deck which i brought to Top 8 in Singapore Regionals 2017. I was torn between this or LOTC for Siege of Meereen but figure im more of a mid-range control player rather than an aggro player i decided to stick with the same deck. Modified my original deck abit and also had some inspiration from Isan. H(King of Swiss, Fracas 2017) and one of the GenCon Top 16.

I made two plot and scheme changes from the standard Joy Rains deck - Barring the Gates and Wheels Within Wheels. Both worked out actually very well.

MVP Cards: Barring the Gates Knowing like half of the field would be playing flea bottom i decided to include this and replace Rise of the Kraken to buy me 1 round of time to counter it. Works really well as i was able to shut out a few of my opponents during their crucial turn.

Wheels Within Wheels Replaced Varys's Riddle with this as i feel Varys Riddle is super inconsistant as normally u just want it for Confiscation / Counting Coppers or a clutch Marched to the Wall. During testing like only 1 out of 10 games i found it useful so i decided to add a little surprise in this Scheme. Worked out well as it caught some of my opponents off guard thinking i have nothing else to trigger anymore or when you need that We Do Not Sow / extra Save.

Dagmer Cleftjaw Went missing for some games but on the games i got him into play he gotten me some pretty neat locations - Flea Bottom / Tower of the Sun just to name a few

Euron Crow's Eye Nothing much to say about him except he is da bomb in this deck. He can win games alone with a little luck.

Corsair's Dirk +2 str and steals the gold for me to Nightmares/We Do Not Sow, whats not to like. Really an underestimated card IMO.

Duds

Varys Honestly i might do away with this guy. Only activated him like once and he seen play in only 2 games. the other game when i needed him, he got milked. ya so the bald dude didnt do much good for me.

Game Recap. I have bad memory to remember details so this what best i can remember

Game 1 vs Bara Fealty (0-1) Played one of the Silent Sisters. Demoralizing game for me as i was without any Military Icons for 3 plots even after a Counting Coppers. No Mil so i could not keep up with her big characters and by the time i drew Euron Crow's Eye in Plot 5 its all over. 0 - 15 loss.

Game 2 vs Lanni Wolf (1-1) Had a decent marshall of Theon Greyjoy (TFoA), the Shipwright a Priest. He had Ser Ilyn Payne and maybe a chud. Tried to kill my Theon with Joffrey Baratheon (GoH) so i used my first Risen from the Sea on him. Managed to kill off Joff with #The Red Wedding and he doesnt have any good characters to play anymore. He was forced to Valar Early. Brought out Victarion Greyjoy and his ship and just proceeded with a beatdown and just when he had a stable board back i Valar with a few saves. Closed the game shortly.

Game 3 vs Targ Fealty (2-1) Played the Runner up for the 2016 Siege of Meereen who i know personally and is a very good Targayen player. He had dragons and some chuds on setup. He then brought in Danny but i managed to kill it and maintain my board. He had Flea Bottom and Plaza of Punishment stolen from him and i managed to control his Astapor with Lordsport Shipwright. Had a good board vs his baby dragons and chuds. could have closed the game early but i played it safe as i figured Targ always have some tricks to play. Eventually its too much and i think i closed in plot 6 or 7.

Game 4 vs Tyrell Rains (3-1) Cursing my luck as i am playing the champion from last year. Classic big characters tyrell but i was lucky and had my own big guys and the Corsair's Dirkand Iron Fleet Scout to match his big guys. But i had no dupes on my big guys, and missed the opportunity to Valar Morghulisas Renly Baratheon (FFH) had a dupe and bodyguard on him, by Plot 3 i had dupes on all of my characters and some saves. Turning point of the game when i managed to steal his Highgarden which gave me the window to hit him without fear of some retaliation. Barring the Gates blocked the Queen from triggering and i managed to close this game.

Game 5 vs Hyper Viper (4-1) Faced off a very good player. Unexpectedly had 2 The Annals of Castle Black !!! Caught me off guard there. Played some cat and mouse game with him managing to sort of control my characters. Desperately trying to search for my Nightmares but he put them all in the bottom already. Had no choice but to use Wheels Within Wheels to shuffle my deck and i managed to draw all 3 of them. On his Kill turn i had 3 Nightmares but his Discard pile have 3 The Hand's Judgment so i know i would lose this if i dont do something. Somehow managed to get UO Intrigue in, Kneel his Viper and The Reader's reaction allowed me to topdeack a copy of We Do Not Sow. I then use it to burn his Seal of the Hand which he had no choice but to Counterspell it. Knowing that i am 3 Nightmares ahead of him i just passed. Game ended when he cant cancel my 3rd Nightmares

Game 6 vs Greyjoy Winter (4-2) Got paired up to a classic mirror match against a Veteran greyjoy player who had been undefeated. I had a stronger setup and had an upperhand but i made a mistake of Valar too early. Turning point was a double claim Relentless Assault on me. Which left me with no characters and no way to reset the board.

Cut Game 1 vs Greyjoy Winter (5-2) As i somehow sneaked into the 8th spot i faced my game 6 opponent again. I got in an Early Euron Vs his Early Balon. Euron was doing some hard work for me stealing his Iron Mines and somehow i drew into 3 Risen from the Sea !!! during a Counting Coppers turn. Managed to fend off his Relentless Assault turn and turned the tables on him. The Red Wedding his Balon twice to force him to use Iron Mines to save him. With Euron on board those Iron Mines soon became mine. Kept his board small and economy weak. Also he didnt draw into any solutions and Valar would have hurt him more than hurting me. Went to Time and a Mod Win for me.

Semifinals vs Greyjoy rains (6-2) An early Dagmer Cleftjaw probably allowed me to hold on the game for so long. Managed to steal his Iron Fleet Scoutand Iron Mines and use them against him. Trading character deaths back and forth. I Made a mistake of trigerring The Red Wedding when i went first...which allowed him to kill off my characters also. Back and forth Valars / saves and kills...and our dead pile is filled with dead characters except Victarion Greyjoy and Theon Greyjoy (TFoA) for me and Victarion Greyjoy for him. We both fought hard to equalize the power at like 9 each and time was called. Unfortunate loss for him as we counted cards and i won as i had an earlier Euron Crow's Eye out.

Final vs NW Builder (LOSS) Really cant remember this much as the game went on for 1 hour 45 mins of me trying to break the wall without fail. Cant close the game early and he played well. He had to close the game before the 3rd Valar is revealed or he will not have any more characters. Suffice to say he did and won the championship without doing a single challenge...hahaha.
