Rules FAQ:

  • You cannot marshal a unique card from your oppoent's discard pile if another copy of that card is in play under his or your control, or in his or your dead pile. See FAQ (1.3).

  • You marshal characters "as if they were in your hand", so Famine increases their cost by 1.

So you cant marshal a unique character (that is not in play) from his discard pile and duplicate that character with other copies in the same discard pile? — Hasr 1
You can only put a card into play as a duplicate if you own and control both the duplicate and the duplicated card. So no, you cannot use Night Gathers in any way to marshal duplicates. — mplain 238
