Kennon 263
In case anyone is curious, this is the deck that I played at WilyCon this past weekend to a spectacular 2-2 finish. Granted, I did play the eventual winner (Kyle Vancil) and get to 14 power something like 4 or 5 times. Ah, if only I could have closed...
Anyway, the deck is inspired a touch by Scott's winning Starpike list, but obviously Lannister does the sacrifice and Flea Bottom tricks substantially worse than Martell. This lead to pushing the deck a bit harder in a hand destruction direction to back up the kill based attrition. Props to Joffrey Baratheon (GoH), who can be a beast if people haven't seen him played in awhile. The biggest star of the deck from testing the week before and the tournament itself is almost certainly The Queen's Assassin. It feels good to have a Core Set ambush card still feel relevant.
That said, it appears that initiative is this deck's biggest weakness. Joffrey Baratheon (GoH), Ward, and Frozen Solid all depend on your opponent having worthwhile targets to start with, so I was certainly put into positions where it was vital that I go second. Most notably, in the final turn against Kyle Vancil. I was sitting at 14 power and had cleared his board. Unfortunately, he won initiative and had me go first.... whereon I top decked Ward and Joffrey Baratheon (GoH) with no targets.

I have thought about Ramsay Snow some. I passed on him in an earlier version of the deck when I was still using Cersei Lannister (LoCR) due to concerns about costs running too high. Worth considering now that I've dropped to Cersei Lannister (Core). Possibly drop 1 Arya Stark (Core) and 1 Frozen Solid for 2 Ramsay. Also, I would certainly be slotting in Breaking Ties now as that will solve some of my initiative issue, while giving another use to cheap loyals like Lannisport Guard (I might go up to 3) and another way to ditch a copy of Joffrey Baratheon (GoH) so that I can play another, all while depriving my opponent. I'm also even strongly considering trying to find room for Taxation in the plots for a higher initiative income plot that would let me land some of my glut of limited locations a bit faster. |
Interesting deck idea. Any thoughts on Ramsay Snow? Pretty gold intensive, but seems a reliable way to rid yourself of a Joffrey and double up on the attrition.
