The Story Behind the Deck
The story of this deck truly begins a few weeks before Stahleck 2023. It all started when SGE had the idea to play Night’s Watch 321, and we tested it extensively. Despite our efforts, the deck just didn’t quite come together. Frustrated, I pivoted to Stark Fealty—only to find that I performed rather poorly with it.
Then came the release of Saved by the Watch, and suddenly, the 321 concept was back on the table. Somewhere in the middle of this brainstorming, I had the idea to try out Banner of the Wolf.
After a few games and more than a couple of rage quits, I sent the list to SGE. He was immediately on board. Our thought process was this: most players prefer and enjoy playing "fair," aiming to win the game through board presence and challenges. This deck, however, is the party crasher, sacrificing good karma in favor of disruption.
When lennart-ip also found Night’s Watch Wolf better than NW 321 and gave his insights, the reaL tinkering began. Over the following weeks, we worked on the list. Flea Bottom Alley? Gone. Aged Craftsmen? Out. And as tradition demands: one last-minute change on the night before the Joust.
In the end, SGE, lennart-ip, Puppenkoenig, and I played this deck.
This deck was more than just a tool for the tournament—it was great time spent with good friends working together for one big goal: making the cut.
Best Moment Making the cut in a “to good to be true” manner: , followed by a Flayer trigger, Marched to the Wall, and Ramsay Snow combo led to the most satisfying board wipe imaginable (I am sorry Francisco!). To top it all off, I “saved” Renly Baratheon. And now his watch begins.
Worst Moment As much as I enjoyed the tournament, the low point of the event was playing against my two longest and best friends. Knowing I had to eliminate one of them to advance felt terrible, and to then be eliminated by the other in a mirror match was bittersweet (spectators attested it to have been the worst match of thrones they ever had to endure – I assure you, playing wasn’t fun either 😊 ). Like what are the odds?!?
Funniest Moment The "good luck ritual" that Rein, SGE, and I got performed on by Yuleooze. I won’t spoil the details—those who know, know 😉 We did not perform the ritual before the final…

Since I won´t do a report, maybe a few words from me ;) I had a blast building this deck and tinkering with you. So Jakob, thank you for that. I think in the end it was very good, I would not change much. Maybe the Kindly Man is debatable, but we played him becauce he is such a cheap Tricon. The card I whished for the most in desperate situations was Yoren. Still can turn aroung the tide sometimes, but 3rd copy is difficult because of mutiny imo. So thank you to everyone who made this trip so special, like every year. I so much enjoyed travelling with my friend, meeting my friend, and making new friends. With Stahleck one day in the books, I realize how much it ment to me proving to myself that I could do another Top8, after more or less retiring from the game for 95 % of the year. See you around next year. Unfortunately we will have to continue the "good luck ritual"... ;) |
