8Regents2025Stark 1

Hi folks, Odrl here. :)

As promised, we want to share some of the decks we played in the recent 8 Regents tournament with you. This is the deck I played in my Round 1 game against Baratheon, and it proved to be quite successful. The Gold Price was a tricky agenda that we didn't really fancy beforehand, that's why we even traded the other copy away to Baratheon. But after trying it out, I kind of liked what it could do. We were expecting Baratheon to play constructive decks against us, and I found after a few tests that this deck actually has quite a good chance against that.

Basically, the general concept follows that of Knights of the Hollow Hill, but I actually tried to make the agenda relevant here. Of course the first part is getting around the downside of your locations entering play knelt, that's why the economy is strictly locations with a gold modifier, plus 3 copies of The Iron Bank. The only other location here is Harrenhal (GoH), which actually doesn't care about being knelt. It does not kneel for its effect, it only kneels your faction card.

The positive side of the agenda is of course being able to steal a character that is randomly discarded. In this deck, that basically only means claim, that's why there is a bit more focus on icons than there usually is in Stark. Of course it is possible to have leftover gold to keep a stolen character, but I think it's quite rare for that to work out. And it blocks cards like Old Gate and Alysane Mormont, so sometimes you don't really want it. The main idea is more about possibly getting an impactful character for a round, and then basically having it there to be killed for claim, or to be used with cards like The North Remembers, Our Blades are Sharp, or even Bolton Loyalist. I think I originally had 3 copies of all of those cards in the deck, but as you can see by this final version, Our Blades are Sharp has proved to be the most useful. And it's useful outside of the agenda as well, often just sacrificing a Roseroad to get something like two Ramsays out of the discard pile. If you can pay for them (for instance, with a loaded Iron Bank), that is the kind of attrition that is difficult for the opponent to survive.

Apart from the House Bolton subtheme, which includes Roose Bolton (WK) and Reek (HMW), the rest of the deck is similar to what you would see in Knights of the Hollow Hill. There's additional kill effects with Crannogmen and Ice (Core), additional steal with Ward, and claim raise with Winter Is Coming. And of course the plot deck follows that as well, with basically 3x Marched to the Wall if you consider The Hour of the Wolf as basically the same thing. And there is Arya Stark (TFM) to clear the board with Valar Morghulis, if it becomes too much to handle. The only exception to the attrition plan here is Late Summer Feast. Since you do not actually get +3 gold like Knights of the Hollow Hill does, I think a plot to take the tempo hit of playing cards like The Iron Bank or Harrenhal is needed.

In the tournament game I played, Bara did go pretty wide in the beginning, but I had Arya and Harrenhal on the board, which gave me a really good Morghulis situation. And to make matters worse, a duped Ser Richard Horpe was left alone on the board at one point, when I was first player with Reek in shadows. That was too big of a hit, and further attempts by Bara to get back into the game were basically ruined by my drawing both copies of Ward.

So in the end, I kind of wish we could have played this agenda more than once, because it turns out the trigger can be quite nice on small boards, and you have ways of using the stolen characters to pay the costs of other things you want to do. Difficult to compete with Knights of the Hollow Hill as the perfect agenda for this style of deck though. :)
