This deck went 3-1 in a local tourney winning matches against Targ/lion, Baratheon Fealty and Lannister Fealty. The loss came against Greyjoy Fealty.
The deck is inspired by a deck that Dan Strouhal (Twn2dn) recently played against Pulseglazer and Darknoj on the Beyond the White Book youtube channel. Dan’s deck was NW/Lion but I went with the same basic theme but with Banner of the Kraken instead.
The idea is to use Varys and Marched to the Wall to clear the board and get characters into the discardpile. Then you recover by playing Yoren to grab something good from your opponents discardpile in order to get a better and quicker recovery than them.
The deck worked surprisingly well. I managed to play Varys every game and each time I recovered better than my opponent. In the game against Lannister Fealty I had to use Varys twice because I as getting two intrigue challenges against me each turn so I couldn’t retain a good hand. Yoren wasn’t always needed either. I could get a good board position after the reset with Here to Serve or Reinforcements as well. It all depends on wether you need to play Marched to the Wall or not right after Varys.
The loss came after a fairly big play mistake. After wiping the board with Varys I played Yoren without first looking in my opponents discardpile and it turned out there were no cost 3 or lower characters in it. Had I checked that I would have played a different character and then I would have had a military icon. Instead my opponent played Balon and since I couldn’t military him he could get 5 power from a power challenge and dominance for the win. If I had a military icon he would have had to either not play Balon or defend the challenge leaving him unable to power to the win. Then Balon would have gotten Marched and I would have had a strong position with a full hand of characters and my opponent being left to pretty much topdeck.
Nice deck Ingsve.
