Battle of the Crossing

Twenty seven player Tacoma SC hosted by Jimmy and Uncle’s Games with a cut to top 8. All game comments are from memory and probably a few mistakes in there, but roughly accurate. I was able to get to 4-1 in the swiss with a loss in the final round, and made it to the top 4 after the cut (no game was played to determine 3rd/4th place, it was a long day already at that point).

Round 1: W

Greyjoy/Fealty

Opponent didn’t draw into his dangerous characters and had a rough setup. Summoned and hit another drowned men. On turn 2, I hit sneak attack+put to the sword, then ambushed in 2x burned men to stop his retaliation (turn 1 I played Tywin out, and had Cersei Marched on turn 2 leaving me with only Tywin). Was able to clean up after this round.

Round 2: W

Bara/Sun

Opponent was able to get Stannis/Nymeria/Mel out in the first couple of turns. I had a thing’s we do for love and 2x tears available to help manage Stannis. His trigger never actually went off allowing me to keep pressure on my opponent’s board.

Round 3: W

Greyjoy/Stag

First round, opponent played trading with the pentoshi. I had played sneak attack. This let me put down tywin and play a things we do for love to remove a claim soak. His board was balon/dupe, cressen, fiery follower. Cressen was returned to his hand, balon and fiery for claim. Then a march on turn 2 cleared his board. Turns 3 and 4 I was able to continue to clear out his board each turn and push for the win.

Round 4: W

Stark/Rose

I was able to cancel an ice on turn 1. (opponent had arya, tumblestone/ice, knight of flowers and a reducer out after marshalling first turn). And, either turn 1 or 2 I also cancelled a winter is coming. This helped me avoid the chain kills and build up my board, leading to a longer game. I had control through most of the challenge phases, but knight of flowers was slowly accumulating power, and was followed by a rob and finally eddard on the board (rounds 4 and 5 I believe). With 9 power at the start of the turn, opponent was able to get to 13, but I had a tears in hand and Nymeria to clear out the int icon from the littlebirded/kof wiping 5 power off the board and sealing the win. Close game that I almost lost to the incremental power gain of renown and kof winning a challenge every round (heartsbane + margaery).

Round 5: L

Bara/Fealty

I hit the dream hands in rounds 1/2 was able to wipe his board with mel on it after a march on turn 2. Then was able to kill a duped bob in round2 with a put to the sword and tears (he had calmed/military there and had a 1 coster reducer also on board). On turn 3, a milk was played on my Nymeria, and Jaime after already having one on tywin. This stalled my military push and opponent played Stannis. This stabilized his board and bought time for the ironthrone and painted table to eat away at me. On top of plenty of unnopposed challenges driven by stannis/fiery followers/mel (replayed since she was marched earlier in the game).

Top 8: W

Targ/Lanni (Gabe)

I was able to get a solid setup vs Targ with 2 reducer chars, tickler, and Caleotte. Caleotte created a situation where my opponent couldn’t be overly aggressive with Dany as first player in round 1 as it risked tears (I also played Tyrion round 1, and bounced his Viserion with a things I do for love to stop the stealth from going by Caleotte). Opponent got Jaime and Dany out in rounds 1 and 2 after an average setup. My own Jaime equalized the board and eventually I tears Viserion and was able to march Dany the following round.

I was able to get a trigger from Warden of the west on round 2 which helped force his counting coppers/reduce options, and over the course of the game, was able to remove 2x dracarys from his hand with intrigue challenges. Lucky there, although it was helped by my opponent having limited opportunities to use them, and warden of the west removing other discard options from his hand.

I made a misblock that caused my hound to get tears and killed in round 3 or 4, but was able to accumulate power on Jaime and push for a win, partly due to a lack of power icons on my opponents side after losing dany.

Top 4: L

Bara/Fealty (Brendan)

Rough game overall. I had a solid setup card count wise (but no power characters). I did have to mulligan into it though, so it wasn’t bad considering. Opponent didn’t get red keep for several turns and the game was pretty stalled by an early Stannis/Mel on his side. I had Jaime/Tyrion out early, but a milk was on Tyrion (although the gold loss actually didn’t hurt significantly as I had few events to play and no hound as the one I did draw was discarded in round 1)

Without removal options for Stannis (Didn’t hit tears, put to the sword, or things I do for love) it became a slow slog that Lanni rarely wins vs Bara. He hit a bob late in the game, but it was sealed prior to that point as I had no answers for Mel, 2x fiery followers, and Stannis. He was able to semi regularly trigger the red keep, and get more value from his characters than me throughout the game. I did get the seal of the hand, but it was confiscated the next turn.

Changes:

Seal was relatively useless. Without milks to absorb confiscation it became a pay 3 gold to stand a character once. It was a little bit of a misjudgement on my part as I didn’t expect to see as much confiscation played as I did.

Tears should be a 3 of. I pulled back to two expecting more targ and lannister. Obviously nice synergy with Nymeria, but in those matchups I felt it was a risk to be over reliant on her.

Potentially worth cutting the second tickler for a third hound. I didn’t originally to help keep the curve down.

Plot wise, I really didn’t miss confiscation even with Nymeria. It hurt me in one game, but I don’t expect that having confiscation would’ve been enough to swing that game as it was. (5th round of swiss vs bara fealty with three milks hitting the table. It might’ve bough me 2 more gold one round before tywin was milked up again and would’ve ultimately saved Jaime from having a milk on him that game).

Still Not Sure:

Warden’s of the West was triggered about half the time it was played. But, the threat of it also has value. I do think it was better than the other 5 gold cards that I was considering in it’s place.

Hear me roar! was experimental and didn’t get used. But, there was also only one time it was sitting in my hand in the tournament. So, hard to judge, but I wanted a 6th in-house event for the shadowblack triggers and the upside on searching for a card that dumps a character into play is high. It’s an easy swap with adding a 3rd Things or 2nd Hand’s Judgement though.
