After shying away from top tier decks for a while, I decided to come back to my first love, Baratheons. I always did decks with a banner so this was my first time going Fealty and boy did it open my eyes on the viability of Fealty :)
Nothing really special to say about the deck. I expected a lot of Martell and Lannisters so I went 3x Selyse. Also tried for 2x Barristan and Davos and am quite happy with the result.
On the evening of the tournament I decided to try and fit a Tourney Grounds in there and ended up cutting a Roseroad for it. I believe this was a mistake and I promptly changed this after the tournament.
Game 1 : Loss vs Phillipe P. (GJ Fealty)
He had a good setup with Theon and a duped Seastone Chair, so I knew i'd have to do a lot of kneeling to keep my people alive. The first turn was awesome, his whole board was knelt (4-5 characters thanks to filthy, Consolidation and Mel) so I could slam 3 UO challenges. A big mistake I made was to play my Wildfire Assault too soon. Things turned around quick when he got Euron out and started spamming my own Kingsroad over and over since I didn't have ways to prevent his pillage in all 3 challenges. It went downhill from there and got crushed under the lack of economy and lack of control against an evergrowing board.
Game 2 : Win vs Tony (Lanni/Sun?)
This was quite an epic game. I remember getting Stannis quite fast and being able to protect him by kneeling his Gregor with a mix of Stinking Drunk and Mel but I couldn't keep him in check forever. I saved my Wildfire for the 7th plot and let's just say that a lot of people died on that day, since his board was full and mostly knelt. Wildest Wildfire ever! I remember one turn where I had Robert in hand and the Iron throne. I decided to play the throne and grind the missing power slowly but surely. It was a good call! Near the end his Gregor was able to pillage Robert and kill Barristan. I thought all hope was lost when he played a Game of Throne while I had no intrigue out, but I got lucky and top decked a Melisandre who was previously Marched to the wall, knelt Tywin, and pretty much won there. Crazy game, always fun to play against Tony :)
Game 3 : Win vs John W. (Martell Fealty?)
I did a lot of Baratheon things to this poor fellow as his own plans never really got started. Crushing victory.
Game 4 : Loss vs Guillaume B. (Lanni/Wolf)
Karma is a bitch I guess! Pretty much what I made John W. endured got back to me this game. Mel started the game milked, then Syrio got Milked, Stannis was PttS, so was Gendry... Crushing defeat!
Game 5 : Win vs Audrey S. (Bara Fealty)
This game was something! First time I ever had a mirror match. I played against Audrey before with her Bara/NW deck so I knew she's familiar with the Baratheon toolset. In my opening hand I had 3 Stannis, 1 Barristan, a Kingsroad and some other things that eludes me. I had no choice but to gamble a big character on setup. I went with Barristan and was glad when we both revealed Calm over Westeros as our opening plot. She had a duped Stannis on turn one, so I raised her to a triple Stannis! The board were similar, but she had Robert and I didn't so my kneel and control had to go against him. The game was tense and low in challenges as I always feared that she had a Ours is the fury (Love this card!), and the one time I dared a challenge, of course she had her only copy of it in hand! What pushed the game in my favor was that I had my Iron Throne and she didn't. Gendry was able to gather 3-4 power. She had card advantage for a long time until I drew my Red Keep and could catch up on cards. When I played Wildfire on plot 7, she kept Robert, Barristan and someone else I can't remember. I Kept Barristan, Mel and Gendry. Not keeping Stannis was a given for both of us (He was double duped on both side!) but she admited that her mistake was to kill Melisandre to the Wildfire. In the end, the Iron Throne and Gendry were able to make the difference in this very weird mirror match.
Game 6 : Win vs Jimmy (Martell Fealty)
I was 15th in standing at that point and he was 17th. So we both wanted a win to get the top 16 prizes :P On setup I had the semi-dream Robert-Reducer-Reducer location while he had a duped Caleotte and 2 Bastard Daughter. This game was demanding. I looked at his hand early and saw a lot of great characters. Arianne, Nymeria, Red Viper, Doran, Harmen Uller, Areo... I wouldn't have it easy! I decided to discard Arianne since I didn't want to deal with her shenanigans. He Imprisoned and Condemned Robert quite fast but after some turns my Rattleshirt Raiders showed up and were able to relieve Robert of his conditions. He hit early me with a Viper Eyes and saw that I had all my key locations, Throne, Table and Red Keep. He decided to remove the Red Keep and this was a mistake. Not wanting to lose on the other locations, I quickly marshalled them next turn and I was able to grind out the game by sitting big fat Bob on his throne. He also had a Ghaston Grey quite early, solidifying my strategy of sitting on my throne for dominance. One key aspect of my game was to hold out on Trading with the Pentoshi until I removed what I wanted from his hand with intrigue because I didn't want all these good characters on board too fast. After a couple of turns I was able to hit Nymeria, but the Throne-Table engine was already in place. Great game overall!
Overall I'm glad with the result but I am a bit salty reading all the other player's report and finding out there was so much IDs in this tournament. I'm still not sure I would've been able to make the cut had these players played and lost all their gamed, but for sure I'm glad this stupid rule is gone.
