Last weekend (18-20 Nov. 2016), the worlds biggest Game of thrones Tournament took place again. I participated for the first time, and it was a really awesome experience. Over the course oft he day I went 5:2 in a field of 286 players, placing 32th after the swiss, losing my first game in the cut. I still want to share my deck because I think it differs a bit from the more usual lannister decks.
THE DECK
This deck combines some rush elements with some board control elements. Tywin, Tyrion, Jaime and Cersei are the core characters of the deck. Tywin and Tyrion provide the well known economy so many people hate, while Cersei and Jaime are very efficient characters that work perfectly with crossing because they don’t kneel, which allows you to do 3 challenges almost every round with high strength. The other characters are just cheap efficient characters to compliment my main guys. The cards left are economy, milks to control the opponents dudes, bodyguards to protect my four lannisters, put to kill annoying stuff, treachery to cancel things and superior claim to make power faster. Wait, what? Yeah, superior claim really amused some of my opponents. I really like the card in the deck because you can speed up the game and force your opponent to deal with the power you gain so fast. In the end, the game is about claiming 15 power, isn’t it?
THE TOURNAMENT
Round 1 against Vasilis from Greece, Lanni Winter
I set up Tyrion (or Jaime), a chud and economy. No I had to decide wheter to play Noble Cause (in fear of wraiths, to get mor cards out) or Calm (against Claim 2). I finally decided to play Noble Cause and of course he played a claim 2 plot. I played Jaime and another chud. He, due his low gold, also only had a few cards on board, but managed to bring through a military challenge with put and claim 2, which only left my Tyrion who was marched really fast next round. However, sonce he also only had a few chaacters on board, I could regain board control with the hound and some burned man and killed his Tyrion during a first snow turn. The game then turned out in my favour, I could refill my board with big guys and was able to get to 15. 1:0
Round 2 against Marcin from Poland, Stark Fealty
I had Jaime and Cersei Round 1 while he only had Catelyn and later Donella. With two superior claim and a put to the sword with a treachery to cancel Bran I could make power very fast while he couldn’t do much about it. Unfortunately, he never saw Rob or Eddard the whole game, even with summons, which also contributed to my win. 2:0
Round 3 against Lukasz from Poland, Targ Crossing (Top 4)
When I saw his Agenda I knew this game was all about power. I set up a lone Tywin, but had luck and he didn’t marched. The game was fairly even, with him having a little advantage due a bigger board with a few more cheap characters. I played towards wildfire, but even after that he had a slight advantage in board position. The game turned in his favour because he had two winter festivals in his deck I couldn’t do much about because I played my summer plot round one. His advantage in board got bigger and who took the win. I think I also made a mistake in the last round, where I played winds of winter and didn’t went first, but I’m not sure if that would’ve changed much. 2:1
Round 4 against Malte from Sweden, Stark Fealty
I played Noble Cause, he played time of plenty round one and made himself first player. When I saw Ice hitting the table I couldn’t play my lords and ladies as I originally planned and put Rattleshirts Raiders and one or two chuds on the board, forcing him to kill the Raiders, which he did. My Tyrion had a bodyguard, luckily. The game then was shaped by two major mistake from both of us.I didn’t read Winterfell Crypts correctly, ambushed a Widows Wail on Tyrion, felt safe and attacked military. Back to the deck, you nasty dwarf! was the consequence. The game then went in his favour until he made his mistake. He was ahead on 4-6 power until the turning point through his mistake. After several people explained him that Winterfell wouldn’t prevent the hound from jumping back to hand, he somehow chose to not trigger it which resulted in me putting his Blackfish with 3 power tot he sword which brought me back in the game. With Tywin, Cersei and claim 2 I could steal away the win. Tough game which showed that a single mistake can lose or win you a game. 3:1
Round 5 against Philo from the Netherlands, Targ Fealty
Time to meet the dragons again! I set up Rattleshirts Raiders and a few chuds. After he played Summer Harvest, I knew he was playing some variation of Giovannis worlds list. Beggar King joined the party few minutes later. In the first two rounds he played a a lot of characters, while I had a few of my good lannisters out, along with some claim fodder. In round one I could discard his beggar king and kill his Illyrio with put to the sword, which gave me an advantage after the first round. He also don’t leaft gold in the first two rounds, which meant that I don’t had to worry about to many things that could happen in the challengens phase. Later, I played Wildfire, killing a lot of his side, marched one of his left characters and closed out the game. 4:1
Round 6 against Christopher from Sweden, Targ Crossing
Dragons, fort the third time. Christopher was a really cool guy from Sweden with, of course, a great beard. After my round 3 loss I really feared the eventual power getting potential of his deck.I think I had Tyrion, some chuds and a kingsroad this time. He set up some dothrakis. I opened with winds of winter, since I had no Lords or Ladies and don’t wanted to fall in the trap of the potential winter festival (again). And I also had a Kingsroad, so what to fear? I played the hound, with some gold left for pur or some burned man. From that point on, I was the agressor in the game. He played around my third challenge, the military one the whole game to avoid my put tot he sword. I played Cersei and Jaime and won the game sooner or later. 5:1
Round 7 against Florian from Germany, Stark Fealty (Winner)
We were playing at table 3 right now, and I’m feeling a but proud fort hat. My start is quite good, nu this changes when Arya and Ice are hitting the table. Winter is coming and Marched are following to further reduce my board. I play Cersei in hope to change the situation, but he won’t stop pressuring my board. He wards one of my left chuds while I don’t draw the cards that could put me back in the game. Somehow I still managed to get to 8 power, but in the end it’s a deserved win for Florian. 5:2
I’m place 32, which is just enough to make the cut. I know that it’s not the coolest thing in the world to progress in a tournament based on tiebreakers (and in my case the second tiebreaker), but that is our system and we need to accept that. At this point I was also very tired, and I don’t like the one day way the organizers went here. I mean I can understand why you want to finish a tournament in one day, but playing the final at 4 am is more a test of mental thoughness than player skill, but that’s my opinion.
TOP 32 against Eric from Spain, Lanni Wolf
So here I am, playing in the cut oft he worlds largest tournament. I reshuffle a three card setup with Rattleshirts Raiders and 2 chuds in… well… a lone Tywin with a bodyguard. He set up Ned, Bran and a piece of economy. This is the second time in the tournament where I wished I had Varys Riddle. Now I had to choose between marched and calm and finally decided to play calm while he of course played marched. I could regain some board control with the hound and some chuds. He played first snow next turn, I marched his littlefinger. Later I put his Tyrion to the sword and played Tywin with a bodyguard, which got put tot he sword with the help of treachery. I could have avoided that, however the chance of put and treacher is low, so I wanted to use my other characters to regain some power, but he had it. He then closed out the game with fast edd and generally a superior board. Well deserved win, piloted by a good player not making mistakes. To sad I don’t saw economy the whole game except my kingsroad one turn 1.
So, I was out of the tournament then, but I’m still quite pleasured with my results. I mean, Top 32 isn’t too bad.
Hope to see you all next time!
- Fabian

Nice deck, and nice performance. I played Lanni/Wolf with similar plan (Power Rush instead of Murder), and it lacked some strength due to few deckbuilding mistakes. Your deck inspired me to change few things, and hopefully it will perform better when I play it next time.
