Now that Valar is coming, it is time to publish the deck that pleased me so much in the last couple of months by placing 3d, 2nd and again 3d in 3 consecutive battles of the trident: Milano, Treviglio and Mantova, each counting 20-25 players. My swiss score was 4-1 each time.

Martell and control in general are not in their best spot right now and this is probably not the best deck out there, but it performed consistently well in a field mainly composed by aggro decks. Also, I just love how it plays, I'll use the words of a guy I played in the last tournament with to briefly describe it: "You never know what's coming next. After recovering from a first Varys I thought I was about to win, having 13 power tokens and wide board advantage. Then a second Varys hit".

Triggering Varys early in the first 2 turns, provided you were able to build a good hand (nice mix of characters and whatsoever) and have a few economy locations out, is usually a good path towards victory. But the deck is also built in order to stand different kind of games and opponents, which of course might see Varys coming. First of all, you might not always be in the best spot to trigger Varys, as it has occurred to me to marshal him and realizing after a proficuous challenges phase I would rather not reset - even if it is a risky strategy as there might be a Milk coming, while the deck only runs Confiscation as attachment control. Secondly, The Iron Throne was probably the most important addition while testing, proving to be wonderful for longer games where some opponents play passively (kind of a tactic against Martell sometimes, especially when Ghaston Grey is out). Finally, the deck can prove itself brutal when Tyene and Nymerya get out of control, coupled with all the other removal effects: in fact, I tried as hard as possible to pack as many as I could in order to maximixe the chance of feeding both an offensive or a defensive strategy, while also keeping the setups nice.

Provided it depends on a deck's agenda and construction, on average good/neutral matchups include Lannister (aggro better than rush), Targaryen, Greyjoy (aggro better than rush) and Tyrell. In order, Baratheon, NW and Stark are the worst matchups in my experience, hence the inclusion of Pyromancers who saved me in a couple of tight games by Summoning them - also they are basically a garbage card and I just loved to drop them with Arianne and seeing my opponents'reactions.

I will be happy to discuss deck and plot choices or other specific questions in case anyone is interested. The final from Treviglio's Battle of the Trident will be online soon, I'll post it here when it will be available.

Go Martell! :D

I noticed that you like Knights of the Sun :), but are they worth it at 3x? Especially with Varys.

I also noticed that Martells need The Iron Throne for damn Bara matchup. Why not 1x Obara Sand, she can help with Bara, and Nym makes her even more flexible? On what plot do you play Varys, that is, how do you reliably play him when lacking 6+ gold plot? The Long Plan + economy? What do you think about Varys's Riddle? I've tried it, and I'm not sure I like it. It hits sometimes, depending on the opponent.

Cheers, keep fighting for our cause! :)

@NikolaP, in my experience Knights of the Sun are fundamental for Martell due to their lack of renown, but they are also generally good bein an efficient 4 cost, droppable with Arienne and no attachments (great against Ward). Since in the perfect game you would reset in T2 or T3, they are most efficient to get you those powers for a quick win whcih is nothing to sneeze at in a tournament environment, plus they are very good to put pressure also when you actually don't reset, especially when you get 2 of them out and can quickly grab 4 power in just 2 turns. For all these reasons I usually run then in 3x over Palace Spearmen (which are also very good of course).

I'm personally not a fan of Obara due to how important First Snow is to this deck and how bad Ward is: as you can see I only run Calette (and Aero) as a 3 coster and that is due to sometimes hitting Summoned by the Conclave with Varys Riddle: in that case I have somebody to look for, but I don't like Caleotte very much either.

As for playing Varys, it really depends on my setup and hand. In some games when I have him in my opening hand, provided I either have a Roseroad or Kingsroad, I like to open with Varys Riddle and just reset very early, which is usually brutal if you manage to go second (6 initiative helps a lot) and get an intrigue challenge in. In generale, Riddle is the best option due to high initiative and gold, plus bonus points for the copy effect. In some other games, Vary following a Long Plan turn is another option, even if it's best use is actually DURING the Varys turn to use that gold in the next phase, posibly followed by Counting Coppers (but beware of the opponent's Varys Riddle in this case!).

Finally yes, my opinion on Varys Riddle is definitely positive. Confiscation and Cointing Coppers are usually pretty easy foresee, plus it helps in case you just setup 1 character and fear your opponent might March to the Wall. In the worst case it's a 5 gold plot with high initiative AND reserve, which is also crucial in some games
