Thrones War Write Up -
Johnny asked that each of the members of Team Martell do a write up on their decks that led to the win. I am not an avid player, but Thrones War is the one tournament that I will be sure to make every year. Ryan Jones does an amazing job of running the tournament, and the team environment is so fun. After making the top 4 in both of my first two Thrones WAR events, I was disappointed with a 4-3 finish, but extremely happy to be a part of the winning team. Here is my report, and I apologize ahead of time for forgetting players names.
I will go quickly over some card choices. I ran both Valar and FSOW which proved to be the right choice all day. There are games that I would not have won without valar and games that I would not have won if I had to play valar for a reset instead of FSOW. I don't know if this is always going to be the right choice, but in the Thrones WAR format, I think both were needed because you were going to be balanced in your matchups.
Scorpion's Sting is truly a great card in this deck. Worst case it really is a superior claim that is easier to trigger, and best case you get a lot more power. It doesn't belong in many decks, but I stand by the choice to have it in here.
I took out political disaster for heads on spikes. In hindsight, I should have left it in as it would have been useful all day and Heads only hit once in the 7 rounds. Let me know if you have any questions about other card choices.
Round 1 Win vs Greyjoy/Dragon
This was one of my more interesting games because my opponent had a duped Mirri off the bat, and I had 16 gold to marshall because of my summer harvest on his pentoshi with a roseroad setup. I was able to take Mirri's intrigue icon, but knew I was not going to be able to stop her because he had a Syrio and Raiding Longship. I played out a bunch of low cost charecters and Doran, knowing he was going to promptly die, which he did. The result though was three UO challenges for me in round 1 and a Dom win, so I was up 6 power to 1. I went into Heads to go first because I had tyene and a tears in hand. He did play down Victarion this turn, but I still killed Mirri with both Tyene and Tears. He was able to kill Tyene with mirri before she left. Once again my chuds did great though, and I was able to a heft power total. Flipped into Winter Festival and used a Doran's Game for 2 power to close out the game in Round 3.
Round 2 Loss vs Tyrell/Watch
This game was lost to David Keller who came 2nd in Swiss. It was my frist time every playing a wall deck, because I just don't play that often. Unfortunately, my lack of experience probably cost me the game. I had an early commanding lead, and I did the bonehead thing of flipping FSOW on his Valar turn. After that I wasn't able to fill the board to get past the defense. If I were more experience, I should have known what was coming and saved my FSOW to prevent 1 or 2 wall triggers and win the game. In round 6 I was first player and he was at 13 power to my 11. I had scorpions sting in hand and could have one a military challenge with 4 characters for the win. The problem being he had Benjen on the table. Military would allow Benjen to trigger first for the win. Game over.
Round 3 Win vs Targ/Lion
This game I felt lucky to win. I setup Arianne and house dayne knight because I had 4 attachments in hand. After the draw phase I only had a greenblood trader in my hand as a character, and I thought I was doomed. Thankfully I was able to get a Knights of the SUn with the trader and stem a tide until the plot 3 valar. This was enabled because I felt my opponent overplayed his hand a little. I think I cleared a Tyrion, Jamie, Jorah, and 2 other chuds on the valar. Because of the long plan the turn before I had 9 gold and a kingsroad to load back up. A round 5 scorpions sting for the renown and win.
Round 4 Loss vs. Bara/Kraken
This was a loss to Kevin Shannon who won Swiss and the tournament. Not much to say besides I had no economy and no characters under cost 5. I was able to tears his Mel in round 1, but the duped Victarion just proved to much for my lack of being able to play anything out. I think this deck actually does well in this match up, but this game was over quick. This was also the only game I saw boneway in all night, and sea bitch ensured that I never put more than 3 power on it.
Round 5 Win vs Lanni/kraken
Played a player from new york and won handily. Kept an ok setup because of the two attainted and tyene. After round 1 marshalling he had a duped Jamie, and a duped Tywin with a seal on him plus a chud. I was prompltly able to kill Tywin by round 2 and keep his board small. Could have killed Jamie, but there wasn't a need. A slower game of kill with tyene and spearmaiden, but effective. I finally got to pull of the Arriane bounce for Spearmaiden entry and mil win on challenge 3 of a round. One of my favorite moves and it seems people are never ready for it.
Round 6 Loss vs NW Fealty
This was vs. Alejandro who I think made top 4. Lets just say that Haunted forest vs a LOTC deck is no good at all. That single card shut me down all game even though I had 7 or 8 characters out. Alejandro played the deck great, but what a waste of time. He would pass on challenges then I would look at the board for 5 minutes and pass as well. I think I would kick myself in the nuts before I played that crap.
Round 7 Win vs Stark/Lion
This was the quickest game of the night. Can't remember that much because I was doing shots with the Stark King to help Johnny win and get into the cut. A round 3 doran's game and scorpions sting led to a 7 power turn before the winter festival to clinch it.
Overall it was really fun day, and cheering for your team every round is a blast and what makes this event great. John but together a great team that had some really consistent players which was one of the keys to winning. Let me know if you have any questions, but I am sure some of the other decks will be up soon.
Nice deck... thanks for sharing and congrats on the Thrones WAR team win! Those Panda deckboxes are awesome!
