This deck did some solid work in testing prior to the SC and went through a multitude of permutations before settling on as is.
Imagine my surprise when a quick glance in ThronesDB revealed that @academo had a list that was very similar! But I was happy that there was enough differences to put any accusations of net-decking to rest. (I did take inspiration from his inclusion of Seized by the Guard and I'm glad that I did! That card put in some serious work all day).
The strategy is very simple - use Marched to the Wall, Venomous Blade, Ghaston Grey and Vengeance for Elia to keep the board state in a manageable state, dropping Valar Morghulis when required. Use Arianne Martell (Core) to sub in a cheeky Areo Hotah (Core) or Dornish Spy when required. Retaliation for the closer.
Heavy lifters - Arianne Martell (Core), Nymeria Sand, Dornish Fiefdom, Gates of the Moon, Seized by the Guard and Burning on the Sand (which I think is very underrated.
Benched - Rattleshirt's Raiders, just wasn't required all day; Dorea Sand - cheap, but little bang for buck, Varys's Riddle - I felt like this slot could of been filled by another econ plot.
Tournament report
Martell Wolf - Similar to the deck doing the rounds on Thronesdb. Mirror matches are tough but managed to take it out after a bit of a mid match grind. My opponent managed to get a Frozen Solid on my Ghaston Grey, The Water Gardens and Flea Bottom, which annoyed me no end. WIN 1-0
Targ Rains - Typical dragon burn with some Second Sons / Flea Bottom shennaigans. Three Bastard Daughter on setup facing an unduped Khal Drogo and a couple of chuds saw Valar Morghulis played as the first plot. Notable for the mid game Astapor with 4 bestow gold, quickly Seized by the Guard with four gold. Still a grind but eked out a win by the 10th round. WIN 2 - 0.
Greyjoy Rains - Got smoked straight out of the gate here. A risky mulligan led to a lack of characters. A cheeky second round Valar Morghulis to draw out the Risen from the Sea worked, but an inability to capitalise and seize momentum lead to a comfortable Kraken victory. A poorly timed Varys's Riddle vs a Trading with the Pentoshi in the third round sealed the loss. LOSS 2-1
Stark Lion - House Bolton shenanigans. My opponents strategy of a narrow board played into my own game plan and I was able to run away with it by the fourth round. Arianne Martell (Core) and Nymeria Sand were the standouts. WIN 3-1.
A few results went my way and I ended up King of Swiss.
Top 4
Greyjoy Dragon - A shit hot setup and a fortuitous first round Vengeance for Elia on an Asha , coupled with my opponents nervousness and unlucky card draw saw me hit a 15-0 win by the fourth round. Arianne Martell (Core) and Nymeria Sand were again superstars. WIN.
Top 2
Bara - Rose. Uncharted territory here, as it was the deepest I had ever been in a tournament. My opponent was hungover, coming in with only 3 hours sleep, a deck thrown together at the last minute and hadn't played for like 2 months - for all the fucking good it did me. A false banner deck that hit the ground running and punished me for my lack of econ. Extremely well piloted and hit all the right notes. Margaery Tyrell (HoT), Ser Garlan Tyrell (OR), Flea Bottom and Hightower Spy absolutely wrecked me and I knew it was over by the third rounds when AGAIN I hit a Trading with the Pentoshi with a Varys's Riddle. LOSS 15-2 and runner-up.
Overall, an extremely rewarding day with some outstanding competition.
Time to build that Sand Snakes deck with the new Sands of Dorne expansion!
Congrats! I'm curious as to why you run Gates of the Moon over Roseroad, since you want to keep the board narrow. Also, how did you feel about the performance of Elia Sand, as personally I would have probably Maester Caleotte over her. Lastly, what changes, if any, would you make to the deck after the tourney?
