Tyrell Lion Kingsguard Version
Zinnie asked me to provide my Tyrell Lion list, which i already did. I promised to provide a write up and now i had time to do it.
First a few words about Tyrell Lion: There are many ways to play Tyrell Lion. There are versions that use Oldtown, Catspaw, Scheming Septon, Sparrows and so on. Tyrell Lion was quite successful recently because it can abuse a few combos. In this deck you try to get a lot of uses of Ser Boros Blount and his fellow kingsguards. But also a more classic shadow deck could be played out of this Faction and Banner combo. This is the version i usually played with a lot of kingsguards and which got hit by the last restricted list. I used this version – with some variations in the last three cow seasons and the botn and it has fared quite well. I think the first one to invent this deck was Emils Stipnieks at least i derived my deck from his version. I first saw his deck in last years world cup and have updated it ever since.
First of all the last restriction list led to the change of a plot: You Win Or You Die was taken out. I think there are four options you could take instead: Vanquish the Unbelievers (all but one characters are knights), Counting Coppers (there are only 6 to 9 cards in the deck to draw and draw is always good), a A Tourney for the King (good closer), Close Call (to revive a key character). Second you had to make the choice between House Florent Knight and Burning Bright. I took out Burning Bright and I think the deck is actually better, because i went back to three The Iron Bank Will Have Its Due. The other card i changed i am not sure of, but i think it is another Ser Osmund Kettleblack. This list is after the restricted list and i have taken Vanquish the Unbelievers as my new plot.
The deck is really fun to play but it also is not that easy to play to get the most out of it. There are many possible triggers and actions can be made in every phase so you have to take care of the right order of your triggers and think about actions every phase. Sometimes gold is an issue so you have to take the right choices, but there are a lot of econ tricks, which are not so obvious. The deck is (in my opinion), very good so often you also will win if you miss a few triggers or make a few bad choices.
How to play: Setup: in the best case you have a gold location (The Arbor or Redwyne Straits) and a draw location (Oldtown Undercity or The Hightower). The Red Keep (R) is also ok but not as good. If you do not set up a character it usually does not matter. Put one or two cards in shadows to round out your setup. But keep in mind that your normal opening plot is The White Swords so keep a kingsguard in hand, because it is possible, that you will not draw another one. Do not put all kingsguards in shadows.
Opening plot is most of the time The White Swords. Sometimes it can be Vanquish the Unbelievers. Then you follow with either Forced March (R), another The White Swords or Vanquish the Unbelievers. If you have House Florent Knight you can also play at the At the Palace of Sorrows (R) but usually this comes later. Usually you win the initiative and most times you go first. Exceptions are usually The Night's Watch and other decks that love to go second.
Basic strategy is heavy aggro, so you should be winning on the board with military, A Pinch of Powder, House Florent Knight, Ser Robert Strong, Ser Mandon Moore and so on. There is some renown to make things faster but there is no passive power gain. Political Disaster helps against location heavy decks (beware the outwit) and other shadow decks and usually it should not hurt you. Dupe your locations.
The most important kingsguards are Ser Balon Swann (gold engine), Ser Boros Blount (cheats in some characters, you can put them in shadows with Clever Feint or take them to hand with iron bank, if you still have a white sword you can also discdard the kingsguard and play him white swords next round, but beware Isle of Ravens or Meereenese Market), The Knight of Flowers (AtG) (lets you use Kingsguard more often, power engine). The other kingsguards are game dependent. Ser Jaime Lannister (LoCR) is great with Green-Apple Knight and helps you win intrigue challenges and also makes the deck much faster, Ser Robert Strong and Ser Mandon Moore help your aggro strategy. Ser Emmon Cuy is sometimes quite handy but actually is only a cheap tyrell character, Ser Bryce Caron and Ser Osmund Kettleblack are nice to have. The Hound (HoT) is rather niche (you can save one of your characters from valar with white swords for example, sometimes against other knights he is also very good, you can also take boros back to hand an ambush him again). Hightower Knight is great with Ser Balon Swann and or The Hightower. If you have one or two of these put the Hightower Knight in play in the plot phase, draw phase or also taxation phase , if you need the money or the reset of the opponent is already gone.
The main locations are the two gold locations, The Hightower and Oldtown Undercity. Sometimes you cannot afford them, then you have to find some econ tricks. Sometimes it is hard to decide if you should play a gold location or a character. White Sword Tower and The Red Keep (R) are good to have and important in some matchups, but can also be changed for style of play. The Hightower is also debatable because you do not have that many Tyrell characters, but i would not change it.
The attachments are there to abuse your shadow cards (Unexpected Guile (R)) or help you aggro strategy. Often they also trigger Oldtown Undercity and or the The Knight of Flowers (AtG). Sometimes it makes sense to trigger them during dom or standing to draw cards with Oldtown Undercity.
Triggers: it happens very often that you have a lot of triggers in the challenge phase, one Ser Boros Blount can lead to up to 6 triggers (Ser Boros Blount, The Knight of Flowers (AtG), Ser Balon Swann, Oldtown Undercity, The Hightower, House Florent Knight). Here, the right order of the triggers and even more the right order of your shadow jumps and challenges can be very important. You also have to keep in mind that you can use triggers in basically every phase.
Possbile changes: i think alchemist guild hall is an obvious choice, which also synergizes very well with oldtown undercity.
