I'd been playing with Stark since the box came out and had been failing at winning with it and put Stark away. Then, on a roadtrip through the south, I heard about the Mississippi Regional, and with no time to test self-made decks I unashamedly net decked Kidohearts' Stark fealty deck that he used on the Atlanta Regional (tourney he had to drop to be with his kid 5 hrs away). I took it upon myself to make things right and win Kido the trophy he deserved.
Forgive vague write-up as I attempt to recall the games 9 hours after the fact.
1st game vs Martell Rose, win:
What I remember was having a solid board early game to his solid board, and baiting him with chuds renown feed so I could take a bigger swing. He by the first couple of turns I had some combination of Ned, Robb and Jon (2 of those three) plus small guys to his mare in heated hedge knight, Knight of flowers, Margery, Arianne sunspear plus small guys. By the middle of the game I had the full Ned Robb Jon combo and could just rush the game out with lots of renown. Core Arya stealthing mare in heat hedge knight consistently was really important and made renown combo possible.
2nd game vs Targaryen fealty, win:
Had a half decent board early round to his 4 char no dupes no chuds board. By the first couple of rounds I had fast ned and Robb not letting my opponent do anything for fear of feeding renown, and I consistently won small mil challenges and took 2-3 cost chars each turn, and was able to handle Mirri well (win the power challenge with the big guys, and when Mirri would stand with Magister Illyrio, defend with core Cat). Won by rushing out the game. Opponent didn't see Daenerys nor dracarys, which helped.
3rd game vs Stark fealty, mod win (10-6):
Hardest game of the tournament for me, a game characterized by who could handle Ice better and have the better board. By the first couple of rounds I had Robb and a few small guys to his Jory, core Cat, direwolf and other small guys. I mismarshalled fast ned thinking I would win the mil challenge, forgetting bouncy lady and not being able to defend the all out mil challenge by 1 strength, lost Ned to Ice, wanted to rage quit but kept trucking along. He saw Ice again, but as our boards grew, as I got more dupes/bodyguards/big mil guys/core Cat + wardens of the north, the game grew more defensive, mathy and grueling. We hit time on the later plots when I was taking my turn as first player, and having a bunch of renown on robb plus some power on my house by the end of the round mod won me the game.
4th game vs Lannister fealty, win:
I saw Robb and fast Ned early game, the biggest guy he saw was the Hound, and Cersei which I iced early on. He had a bounce going but not strong enough without Tyrion. My big guys out competed his weaker board consistently, and by the time he got Varys out to restart and get back in the game I was already ready to do an all out power challenge and win the game on claim and renown.
5th game vs Stark fealty rematch, win:
He saw fast Ned and Arya with Ice + chuds early on to my Robb unduped Arya Cat and other small guys early. I coped with Ice with milk on Arya (felt great), lost Cat to ice on following round (he nightmaresed my Winterfell, which I failed to cancel with the two Pack survives I had on my hand, oh well). The game was characterized by many play mistakes, the biggest one being my opponents' when he solo power challenged with Bran, which I let go unopposed (mistake), which then he activated winter is coming which I cancelled, which then he cancelled by killing bran (mistake), the only attacking character, thus, tragically, not winning the challenge. I outrushed him with Robb, double Greywind, stealthy Arya and renown dude (blackfish or ned can't remember).
Final vs Lannister fealty rematch, win:
He saw the entire family this time around. I consistently had a better board than he did and Grey wind Robb combo pushed it over the edge near the end of the game. He didn't see any target kills (Winterfelled anytime I felt a put to the sword coming, sea of dupes and bodyguards, Mountain pillage misses). I could deal well with the consequences of losing challenges (feed renown, Cersei two claim intrigue, killing dupes) and keep winning challenges and getting power. I milked his Tywin, which made it easier to maintain board dominance, (stealthy Arya helped me win challenges whenever his board was better). I intimidated his Tyrion twice, which felt great. Last round he did an all out mil on a sneak attack, which I winterfelled to simply keep it at a bodyguard + tumblestone claim, and two big challenges with renown dudes won me the game.
I had a great time at the MS Regional. You too can have a good time playing Stark by playing this deck. It's good. This deck's board is consistently better than the opponent's and is consistently able to defend it. Potential weaknesses are board wipes (Varys, Wildfire, FSoW). Dupes, bodyguard and draw (blackfish special insight, gates of winterfell, Robb insight from Luwin every so often, Summons and Building orders) help ameliorate those problems. Having summons and building orders felt good because often I would be ready on chars but not locations or attachments and vice versa, and being able to be ready for both scenarios feels good. Anyway.

Thanks! I'm glad stark got me there too. How did the Carolina regional go? Did you play this deck? |
|
Good games! I'm your Round 2 Targ player. You really locked me out with Cat, and not seeing Dany or any dragons really hurt me. Still had a good time playing, and I was glad when I heard you won! |
The Pack Survives is used only for Robb combo ? Why did you took these instead of HJ ? |
Great write-up, sir. I was your Lannister opponent and really enjoyed playing against you. Hope the road trip saw you safely home |

Thanks for deck a write up! Any idea of how including Ward in this deck now? |
|
Yeah I'm using it with two wards now. Last time I used it I was greedy and didn't kill his warded theon on a wildfire turn and saw a slump when he got him back with 2 power on him. I took a roseroad and a Jory for the two wards. But the bodyguards aren't a bad call either. This deck has really good econ tho and I felt confident taking out the roseroad. Ditto to the Pack survives over Hand's judgement. Thanks for having me and playing |
Well done sir. So when should I expect my trophy, loll lol, jk of course. Glad Stark got there
