Took this to the Regional tournament in Gautier, Mississippi and came in top 4 with it. Built it the night before after deciding standard Lanni felt too slow for my liking. Credit to Buzz, Syd, and PulseGlazer on the original concept of Leaping Lions. Changes made from the standard BAMF deck include:
No attachments: Seal of the Hand is great, and Widow's Wail can sometimes net a surprise challenge win, but I wanted to pack as many events in as I could, and cuts had to come from somewhere. I was worried this would cause a problem versus a Greyjoy matchup due to cards like Seastone chair, but I feel that there's enough Jump in the deck to avoid unopposed mil challenges.
Trial by Combat: Absolute Gold at the right time. Combo with First Snow of Winter or a two claim plot, challenge with Cersei, and eat up a ton of characters. Definitely a great choice, but it is situational, wouldn't suggest higher than two copies.
Tower of the Hand: The idea here is to either discard characters after bouncing them to an empty hand, or bouncing a chud so your Trial by Combat can hit juicier targets. In truth, this location is expensive, highly situational, and more often than not a weak "win-more" card. Highly advise to skip it,
No confiscation plot: added in two Rattleshirt's Raiders to free up the plot slot. Meta here was very sparse on attachments - Only had one milk thrown at me all game. I regularly saw raiders throughout the tournament, so had attachments been an issue they likely would have had it covered without the plot.
The Long Winter: I wanted a two claim plot, and this one is one of the best at the moment. I actually like the "downside" this plot has, as I've found my opponent often in a power lead early game. This pulls them back a tiny bit, which is that much more time for me to gain board control.
Most of the rest of the cards are pretty standard Leaping Lion fare. Quick rundown of my tourney performance below:
Round 1 - Store Championship Winner Bye, yay 1-0
Round 2 - VS Greyjoy banner of the Dragon. Opponent opens with duped Ser Jorah Mormont, Braided Warriors, and a reducer, I with Cersei, Goldcloaks, and a Roseroad. Play First Snow turn one, and he's left with only the Reader and (now un-duped) Jorah, which I eat with a Cersei-buffed Trial by Combat. rest of the game was opponent getting Mirri Maz Durr, so I set Tywin on goalie duty against every shot Mirri took, gaining renown each time. Decently close game, but I slowly pull ahead through challenges and renown. 2-0
Round 3 - VS Lannister Fealty. Opponent gets perfect start of Tywin, reducer, and roseroad. I scramble to find answers, and mostly have to jump characters in just to hold off Tywin stomping down my door. Eventually, I get my own Tywin out, and we both end up with massive boardstates of Tywin, Gregor, Hound, Cersei, and others. We trade challenges back and forth, I get a window to put his Gregor to the Sword and pull barely ahead in power, but he catches up soon after. Final turn, both at 13, I have initiative. Pressure gets to me. I miscalculate the amount of strength I have and he blocks my military challenge successfully, getting renown on his Tywin and Jaime for my loss. 2-1
Round 4 - VS Baratheon Fealty. I'm able to pull off an amazing First Snow of Winter, getting the opponent to just Robert Baratheon and Melissandra during challenge phase. He pulls a military challenge with Bobby, and I claim an ambushed out Burned Men. He passes. I Hear Me Roar! out Jaime, getting an unopposed military challenge claiming Melissandra, followed by Jaime also getting an unopposed intrigue to Tears of Lys Robert. Opponent conceeds a few turns later. 3-1
Round 4.5 - VS Baratheon Fealty. Same player. Sine we had thirty minutes to kill, we played a second friendly game. He sets up with Melissandra, and keeps my Tywin locked out for pretty much the entire match. Pivotal turn is where I play The Long Winter. He has Robert, Melissandra, and a duped Selyse Baratheon. I have Cersei and some others. I push intrigue with Cersei last, getting her to six strength thanks to Lord of the Crossing. She wins the challenge, and I play Trial by Combat, killing Bobby and Mel in the same turn, once again. 3(+1)-1
Cut to top Four
Semi-Final - VS Lannister Fealty. Yep, my only loss in Swiss shows back up as my opponent in finals, except now he knows what all I'm playing. Sadly, it doesn't really matter, as my first hand comes up with only two reducers and a kingsroad to play, and my mulligan gives me a lonely Tyrion Lannister for characters and a Tower of the Hand + Western Fiefdom being my total setup. Opponent Gets another perfect setup of Tywin, reducer, and Fiefdom. I exhaust my Counting Coppers quickly in search of anything to weather such a perfect start. I get some good moves in, pulling a dupe of Tywin with a Trial by Combat, and at one point I get my own Tywin, but I'm faced with my opponent's newly played Gregor and re-duped Tywin plus mountain of cash crashing over my desperate defenses, watching my Tywin be put to the Sword and last character, Cersei, taken by the mil claim. For the next two rounds I fruitlessly hope to topdeck an answer, only to see my Gregor once it's way past too late to matter. Game loss, final placement - Top 4.
Overall, this is an absolutely fun deck to play, it moves very fast, and there's simply too many variables for opponents to really account for. Try it out!
Made a small change to the deck after some playtesting. -2 Tower of the Hand, +2 Queen's Assassin. Simply put, Queen's Assassin is a must. It combos extremely well with First Snow of Winter, as well as your 2-claim plot of choice. Four gold is easy to hold on to when you know it will kill someone important. For the life of me I don't know why I didn't put it in earlier.
Not sure if I'll keep playing this after my FLGS gets true steel. I like the idea of a Lannisport + Casterly Rock + Small Council Chamber all-in intrigue aggro deck, and Ser Payne is a great card except for Leaping Lions since his action is only during the marshaling phase. Depends on how good Payne and the Small Council Chamber are, I suppose.
