I watched your video on the deck, I think its very good and I am going to give it a shot myself. Though I was wondering, is old bear just no good for this or is Ed simply better? Do you think the new nights watch plot will have a place in this deck, I imagine it can screw up a sneak attack turn greatly, also are you planning on putting in the stark’s Mastear so you can give bran so protection and Jon stealth. Lastly what about the other event the nights watch have the one that can shut off your opponents ability to make any more challenges.

ThroneRunner 1148

@habesjn Went with a single copy of Eddard Stark over Old Bear Mormont. I chose not to include either and opted for a 3rd copy of Bran Stark because I feel that a single copy of either of the 7 cost characters would be hard to come by, and even more difficult to marshal.

As far as plots go, the new plot that will allow tutoring for a maester would be a great include as Maester Aemon is a very important piece in this deck.

To my testing the 8 MIL icon isn’t enough. Tested against Stark/Lanni, who are fat on MIL, but I assume it will be the same against Greyjoy and Targ. I’m revamping the deck further. Also Jon Snow was really useless. Never found time to utilize his attack capabilities. Was better off with 2 smaller drops and turtle for 2 points from The Wall.

Phantomluffy 1

I think that if you use “a noble cause” you should change 2 Jon Snow for 2 Eddard Stark. Waymar Royce is a character who tends to die, I would remove a copy. It’s my opinion good day!! :)

Played this deck 3 times last night and really enjoyed learning the game with it (new player here). I lost to Bara Fealty and Targ Fealty but started to get the hang of the way it’s supposed to play. I look forward to playing with it some more. Thanks for putting it up here and on your YouTube channel.

What sense in sansa + wall combo? you can give power only once - so standing phase is enough

ThroneRunner 1148

@vladimir she gets power for standing once per round so she’s good to have every round either initiating or blocking an intrigue or power Sansa Stark

Tanatos 1

Hi @ThroneRunner, subscriber here of your YT channel. I tested this deck several times. It works pretty well, but i found that its pretty difficult against heavy military decks (i managed to defend the wall against lannister/targaryen and win but it was kind of difficult)..did you think about the possibility of including Ghost or maybe Rattleshirt’s Raiders just to fill some military?

Dydra 1467

@Tanatos I ran into the same trouble. I personally would go for direwolf pups because of the cheaper cost to play.

Tanatos 1

@Dydrayep but Direwolf Pup its only 1 STRG, that for chumpblocking seems ok but..i dont know…what i did its to add Ghost and Eddard Stark to fill some MIl (-1 copy od Bran Stark and -1 copy of Veteran Builder). Once take the black chapter is out i will include 2 copies of Will for sure instead of the 2 Jon Snow

jaypeedaylee 36

OK I am not sure on Plot choices… Is A Noble Cause really worth it in this deck?

Also I replaced a Confiscation for Here to Serve.

Bumped Aemon down to 1 card, dropped Sam for Maester Luwin.

Also lowered Bran and Vetern Builder by 1, dropped in 2 Ghost and 2 Wil.

Thoughts?

ThroneRunner 1148

@jaypeedayleeI have also been looking at dropping A Noble Cause to fit a copy of Here to Serve. For me, though, Confiscation is a difficult one to drop because it has so much utility. It affords you the opportunity to remove Milk of the Poppy from Benjen and/or remove annoying attachments on your opponent’s side of the board.

Going with 1 copy of Aemon and 1 of Luwin is risky imo. Despite having the ability to tutor for the Maester of your choice, you still benefit greatly from not only seeing Aemon in setup, but being able to have him duped just in case.

Because of the defensive nature, you might find that Wolf is difficult to play (cost wise) and not as useful because he only blocks 1 type of challenge.

Still working on my post Taking the Black version of the deck though. Look for some footage of it in the coming weeks!

Tanatos 1

@jaypeedayleethis is my first version of the deck with taking the black, still working on it: thronesdb.com

How do you combat Bara-fealty? I found it almost impossible with Night’s Watch + Stark.

Tathagata 51

Thanks for this, I really love playing this deck. Just won the Bristol winter tournament with it. Against Bara-Fealty I managed to Milk of the Poppy Robert Baratheon, and I used Wildfire Assault quite early, as soon as they had more characters out than me. Kind of telegraphs your intentions but if you’ve decided to play Wildfire Assault next round it’s handy using Castle Black’s ability on the Veteran Builder and then sacrificing him to stand Castle Black ready for the next challenge. The ravens are great to soak up any military challenges you lose, especially if Maester Amon is knelt.

Tathagata 51

Has anyone played this against Greyjoy?

ThroneRunner 1148

@TathagataAlways happy to see people enjoying the deck and seeing successes with it!

I uploaded a tournament round of myself playing against a Greyjoy/Targaryen deck last night youtube.com/thronerunner

munkeykungfu 8

@TathagataI still hate you Tristan for the final. Still can’t believe all 3 of my copies of the wall were in the bottom 10 cards ;-)

Tathagata 51

@muneykungfuAh man bad luck! You’ll get a chance for a rematch soon! Got Taking the black now so I’m playtesting this deck with Will included.

munkeykungfu 8

@TathagataThis is my current take on it with TTB - www.thronesdb.com

Tathagata 51

@muneykungfuLooks like you need to enable ‘share your decks’ for me to be able to see it!

munkeykungfu 8

@TathagataIt is published :s Hmm look on the inspired for decks to the left. Mine is the wall must stand

phage10 2

@muneykungfu I cannot find your deck through the link. It tells me to tell you to share it. I would love to see it.

phage10 2

@ThroneRunnerI would love to see an update of this with Taking the Black. Any chance you will be posting one soon?

clovis20 1

@ThroneRunnersame question from phage. And what about Taking the Black? What have you done with this deck? any change?

ThroneRunner 1148

@phage10 @clovis20I had originally made some changes involving cards from TtB and found that they did not improve the deck, at least from my perspective.

I ended up making changes in other areas, using just core cards, that I feel have improved the overall effectiveness. I wasn’t sure that people would have an appreciation for a video highlighting those changes that didn’t incorporate the new cards.

That being said, I’ll happily toss one up on the channel anyhow!

phage10 2

@ThroneRunnerI would happily watch a short video on update on the deck and a new deck list on thronesDB, even if it doesn’t include non-core cards. That would be interesting.

Tathagata 51

@ThroneRunnerI’d love to see your update to this as well; I really enjoy playing this deck.

phage10 2

@ThroneRunnerI was thinking of swapping Wildfire Assault out for building orders to try and get The Wall out and I think Wildfire can be risky unless you play it early. I seem to think you can build up a lot of characters and then be forced to use Wildfire and hurt yourself with it. Do you not find this to be the case?

Tathagata 51

@phage10I usually get Wildfire assault out early, to stop the opponent getting any kind of challenges advantage before you’ve built up a strong defence. It can be annoying to have to play it if you leave it until your last plot, but I find this deck wins pretty early if it wins at all anyway.

phage10 2

@TathagataThat is a very good point. I played this yesterday evening against a Targ Fealty I had also built and regretted not having WFA in the first game so I put it back in for the second and used it early. I will remember to try and play it early then. Any tips for taking on Targ Fealty would be good (or I can just accept I am a rubbish player).

Joe From Cincinnati 1649

@phage10 Targ Fealty is a really rough fight for this deck. Mainly because of Dracarys and Plaza of Punishment. Those are the main things to remember. Other than that, they’re a relatively simple to handle as long as you have the defenders.

For Dracarys, it’s just a matter of looking at your characters side of the board. If they have a standing dragon and either a gold or fealty, be weary. If they attack with a character that they know can’t win a challenge, keep that in mind when you’re defending. For example, if you have the Wall, 2 stewards and Sansa in play and they declare an intrigue challenge with their handmaiden, they are probably expecting you to defend with just one character, hopefully Sansa, and then they’ll dracarys her. The two options are have a hand’s judgement or, better yet, Bran on standby. Or, defend with two characters. Sure, they’ll be able to kill one, but you’ll keep it opposed and the Wall will remain standing.

As for Plaza of Punishment, I am currently playing around with the idea of including some Noble Lineages in my deck. Maybe 2x. Not only will this increase the number of icons in the deck, further increasing your defending options, but it will also make whoever it is attached to immune to Plaza of Punishment, since it specifies that the character must not have attachments. I was trying to decide between Syrio’s Training and Noble Lineage, since Sam, Sansa and Arya would all benefit greatly from Syrio’s Training, but our friend Thronerunner here thought it better to include the zero cost attachment rather than the 1 gold attachment. Noble Lineage doesn’t really help Sansa or Arya in terms of icons, but it does keep them safe from Plaza and Seastone Chair. And it’s useful for Sam, stewards and Will.

Are there any other things about Targ fealty that you’re having trouble with?

phage10 2

@habesjnThanks for the advice. I don’t get chance to play much. I built this and a Targ fealty and taught someone in my local gaming store how to play and they beat me 0-2 with Targ. Both time they got a lot of dragons out early along with Plaza. I also think I am just bad at card games. My game store is having its first tournament this weekend so I don’t know my local meta. I might try this out or something else. Difficult.

Tathagata 51

@ThroneRunner``@Joe From CincinnatiAny ideas on how a NW Banner of the Wolf deck would look now, or do you think NW Fealty is now more powerful?

Tathagata 51

I think I messed up the tagging there. @ThroneRunner @Joe From Cincinnati

Joe From Cincinnati 1649

@TathagataI am really on board NW fealty right now. I haven't really played NW Stark since about March. I still think it has merit, but First Snow of Winter really hurt the core nucleus of the Stark banner; Bran, Arya and Sansa.

Arya still works because she has her own dupe, but Sansa being returned to hand really hurts your tempo since she comes into play knelt, so you lose a power from her standing and you won't be able to use her to defend the following turn (after you already had one turn where she also came into play knelt.)

I think Fast Eddie makes an interesting pull in for NW, as does the core Eddard, but I think I like Old Bear Mormont more than either of them right now and the fealty really helps with that.

If I were to play NW Stark, I think the banner would be 2 Arya, 2 Sansa, 2 Bran, 2 New Eddard, 1 Septa Mordane (when she comes out next pack) and a few wards (again, when they come out next pack).

I wouldn't run Watcher on the Walls, as I believe that card is unplayable without fealty. But I would run the Sword in the Darkness, Old Bear and the rest of the standard NW characters (ravens, aemon, Benjen, stewards, Sam, Ranging Parties)

I'm really looking forward to Old Bear's Raven as well. That would play well on all the Stark characters, and is unbelievable with Old Bear.

Tathagata 51

@Joe From Cincinnati

Thanks for that! I'm going to practise as much as possible with your NW Fealty deck then, and run it in the regionals in a few weeks, in Bristol. I'd prefer to play NW Fealty anyway; I mainly want a deck which people are unfamiliar with and which will take them by surprise.

I agree, Old Bear's Raven is going to be great!

Joe From Cincinnati 1649

@TathagataJust be very very weary of First Snow of Winter at all times. I've lost sure wins because of it in the past. Maybe slot in an additional Alliser Thorne (who is great on first snow turns) and pray for a good 4 cost intrigue icon in the next cycle haha.

munkeykungfu 8

@Tathagatadoes this mean you will finally grace us with your presence on game nights :-p

Tathagata 51

@muneykungfu

I'd like to think so but I doubt it Liam; I've taken on far too much work so that's all I do now, as well as being far too skint to afford the three most recent card packs (not sure how that works out)!
