I've never won a melee table before this tournament. Hell, I'm pretty such I was always 4th place at every melee table I sat down at...until U.S. Nationals 2026, with this deck.

This deck tied for 1st place on the 1st game, and then won every table after that.

The night before the melee tournament, after joust had wrapped up, I talked to Storm about my concern that my Stark deck for melee was garbage, given that everything interesting or fast about it was podded or restricted to hell and had no viable chance at winning a single table. I'm mostly a Stark player, so I was a bit bummed about it. Storm said he had a deck to look at, so we started theorycrafting what ultimately became this deck. We swapped out probably 15-20 cards from his original list and changed a couple of plots during our discussion - the main things being The Silver Steed, Waking the Dragon, and getting some The Dragon's Tail (AtSK) in there. I can't remember if 6 cost Rakharo (TRtW) was in the original list, but he is a key lynchpin in this deck.

It's a fairly easy deck to pilot, and you can technically go from 0 to 15 power on plot 2 if you get the right title. "0 to 15 without combo? No way!" Yes way. Master of Ships with Rakharo (TRtW)and Khal Drogo (Core) can net you 6 power from claim alone, not including rival bonuses, intimidate, unopposed...and you still have intrigue and two potential power challenges (The Silver Steed) after that. That was how our final table went, after all. I won on plot 2 with two challenges left - intrigue and power - after having done two military and one power challenge, and I'd come into plot 2 with 6 power on the board. And that was AFTER Rakharo (TRtW)got Ghaston Grey'd, and I was able to pop him back out with Overwhelming Numbers.

The main thing to remember is that, for the most part, your gold is to be spent almost entirely on events the turn you mean to win. Turn 1 plot is The Maiden (HMW), followed by Vanquish the Unbelievers or Fury of the Khalasar, depending on your hand going in. The Dragon's Tail (AtSK) after reserve turn 1 help you figure out if you can win turn 2 or not.

Frankly, Rakharo (TRtW) needs to be restricted, or at least podded with Khal Drogo (Core). Sure, that's a judgement from someone not incredibly experienced with melee, but I feel like that's more of an indictment than anything - if a 4th place melee loser like me can take this deck and win every single table in a tournament, a more experienced melee player can probably break it even more.
