(Revision): This is an updated version of the deck running Kings of Winter instead of Fealty with the changes being minimal.

-1 Maester Aemon/ -2 Tears of Lys

+3 A Meager Contribution

-1 Marched to the Wall/A Noble Cause/Calling the Banners

+1 Winter Festival/Wraiths in Their Midst/The Winds of Winter

After seeing the new Night Gathers... event I wanted to expand on the Varys/Yoren combo and this was the result.

Almost every game start with Wraiths in Their Midst to assert your reserve choke on your opponent. Building Orders is needed to retrieve any brutal attachment or location needed for reserve boost. The carry over of Ranger's Cache yielding 7-8 gold w/o any other economy is great for regaining the board and setting up for Night Gathers.... Winter Festival gives decent gold and helps close with the power gain. The Winds of Winter is used for a double claim swing preferably with ghost to punch all 3 challenges through. It can be swapped for Snowed Under if you find you are needing to counter high initiative plots or lacking income. Marched to the Wall is a no brainer with Yoren and the inevitable increase to their discard pile. Originally the whole deck was based around Varys but I found that with Marched to the Wall, heavy intrigue pulls and opening reserve choke discard, Night Gathers... has plenty of targets. Varys still helps punch intrigue and reset the board especially if you have more dupes (Ghost) than your opponent.

On opening hand you want to see White Tree and/or A Meager Contribution, one reserve booster, one economy card and as many low cost drops as possible prioritizing that order when thinking about a mulligan. It is imperative to increase your reserve value in order to avoid the 4 reserve choke on yourself from Wraiths in Their Midst/Kings of Winter and to play Night Gathers... hence the 3x Samwell Tarly, The Iron Throne and Northern Rookery. There is always a chance that you won't see Varys or Night Gathers... but after extended testing, most games were won w/o playing either card due to card draw and flooding the board. MVPs for the deck are Ghost, Yoren, Samwell Tarly and Halder with practice blades winning me many games due to ambush and Halder unlimited strength potential with 3x Craven, 3x Practice Blade and Northern Rookery due to its lack of need to kneel for an action. Messenger Raven is probably the most important card in the deck as it allows you to draw into all your control and to make sure you see Night Gathers.... Almost every game that I saw 1-2 Messenger Raven I was able to outpace my opponent. They also have the benefit of dodging Varys and with all the reserve boost I rarely had to discard after bouncing.

I would appreciate any feedback and suggestions that any of you may have regarding the deck choices I have made. Feel free to play test this for yourself and let me know what weaknesses you may have found. Lastly I would like to give a shout out to Bambi's Smash n' Grab deck which planted the seed that grew into what this deck has become. Now Your Watch Begins...

For those of you who might not know, there has been a rule change regarding Yoren/Night Gathers... and playing an opponents unique cards.

You may not play a unique card with Yoren or marshal unique cards with Night Gathers... if:

  1. Your opponent currently controls a copy of that card
  2. A copy of that card is in opponents dead pile
  3. You currently control a copy of that card
  4. A copy of that card is in your dead pile (mirror match)

This only effects unique cards. However if you play/marshal an opponents unique card within the parameters listed above, they can not play a copy of that card on their side of the board as long as you maintain control of their unique. Hope this helps!

The only thing that can go wrong with this approach, is if your meta is KoS heavy. Targaryen, Baratheon, Tyrell and Martell have no reason to run Fealty over Summer, so I expect to see a lot of this agenda, which completely nullifies KoW (and KoW in turn nullifies theirs, but the summer plots have higher basic reserve and gold).

How's your meta?

@HidaHayabusaI have found that this deck does extremely well against all non-Kings of Summer that I've faced in testing. You do have to watch out for The First Snow of Winter but you can play around it in a few different ways if you feel/know that your opponent has it.

As for Kings of Summer, like you said before they cancel each other out. This hurts your choke but also hits their gold gain. The deck then functions more like my previous Fealty version which can still outpace your opponent with card draw and flood. White Tree and A Meager Contribution become very important to prevent them from getting out too many cards and you want to be as aggressive as possible. The Varys/Night Gathers... combo can be very good if your choke fails. Get him out and play Ranger's Cache then segway into Winter Festival to go ham on their discard pile. If you know that you are going to Varys, hang on to as many Craven/Milk of the Poppy as you can to control the board post wipe.

Kings of Summer definitely gives me the most trouble. The deck takes practice as it isn't the easiest to pilot effectively and has little room for error. Once learned, it is a gale force of tragedy that will leave your opponents broken and battered by the harsh winter winds. Feel free to post any plot/deck changes that you feel might help counter Kings of Summer.

Varys's Riddle. Most of them will start with Summer Harvest, especially against a deck they don't really know, so if you Varys's them they get 2 gold. 3 If you count their agenda. Any Meager/White tree just shuts down an entire turn.

Good idea. Depending on how many KoS decks I see I'll think about throwing it in there. The only thing I could sub for is Building Orders or The Winds of Winter. Thanks for the suggestion!

I think that, too many of 3 copies Yoren and Night Gathers. In the beginning of the game opponent may have a poor discard. Do you always have gold to Night Gathers...? Maybe, add attach/location to Halder or copy character to Varys?
