First I take no credit for the idea of this deck, I saw the Tempo Jumpers deck by Vaapad and loved the way it played. I played it at a previous store championship and missed the cut because of a mod win, then tweaked it slightly for another store championship this past weekend. First thing was to modify as he suggested, adding 2x Treachery going up to 3x Tower of the Hand by taking out 2x Lannisport and 1x Mountains of the Moon, while swapping Counting Coppers in for Confiscation in the plot deck. I also added 1x Ser Gregor Clegane for 1x Timett Son of Timett for the first store championship.
The changes I made for this championship: Go back to 2x Timett Son of Timett - I found Gregor was basically just there for harrenhal, and I preferred the (slightly) cheaper character I might actually marshall. Add 2x Mountains of the Moon - It just combos so well with Moon Brothers, and is pretty good with Burned Men and Shagga as well. Plus at just 1G it helps on set-up and is relatively easy to play. Cut 1x Trial by Combat - I just didn't find myself with the gold and desire to play this all that often. This is probably the first card I'd add back in though. Cut 1x Widow's Wail - nothing against this card (it's great), but I needed to cut something else for the second Mountain (I wasn't seeing it as much as I'd like) and this was the easiest cut. Swap The Long Winter for Famine - I was finding three 2 gold plots was just so rough. Famine is really good, but I wasn't going to cut Valar and Coppers is important as well.
We only had 8 at the championship, so it was just 4 rounds of swiss, with the King of Swiss getting the title. The games:
Round 1 - Lanni Rains Was able to get out both the Tower and Harrenhal by Turn 1, and with a Cersei in my hand that's just a rough combo. Valar cleared the board turn 2 or 3, and it was just mop-up work from there. 1-0
Round 2 - Bara/Kraken I was worried about this game, since the passive power gain of Bara + the saves from Kraken make this a tough matchup. I think he set up just Davos, who I marched. Luckily for me, he didn't see his Iron Mines until turn 3, which was after my turn 2 Valar killed King Stannis (and Mel too, perhaps?) Victarion came out after that, but I was able to Varys' Riddle his Marched, and then his big guys were all dead or discarded and I was able to close it out. 2-0
Round 3 - Bara Summer When I saw this combo, on the other hand, I wasn't as worried - especially after I was able to set up Tower and Harrenhal. Sure enough, a turn 2 Valar wiped out Stannis and Barristan (and a couple others), with a Treachery on a later game Mel to help finish it off. 3-0
Round 4 - Tyrell Rains This was a much tougher matchup, and I didn't see Harrenhal all game. I was able to get Tywin, duped Tyrion (milked), duped Queen Cersei, and Timett out. It was a more grindy game, but Timett killing a 3 str character and Cersei's power gain helped. I clinched by blanking his Arbor with Nightmares, meaning he couldn't marshall a high strength character to defend my 2 claim. Moon Brothers played a big role in this game by helping push through some military challenges as well (take that, Highgarden). 4-0
Overall the deck performed almost perfectly, as I got the Harrenhal/Tower of the Hand combo in 3 out of 4 games. It's definitely a deck with a lot of moving parts - even after playing it a lot over the past couple months, I made some mistakes. Thankfully they were relatively small, and I was able to win all my games. If I was going to change anything, I'd probably look at the 3x Spy and Assassin (several times they were dead cards in my hand), but I don't know what characters I'd add back in their place. Thanks Vaapad for the original deck idea, I've really enjoyed playing it!

Glad it did pretty well for you! It's interesting you're thinking of cutting the Spies - I was actually thinking about cutting one each of the Red Keep Spy and The Queen's Assassin. The nice thing about the spy is that you get to choose what to bounce, so in situations where ambushing an assassin would have them just kill a reducer, you can bounce, say, Margaery Tyrell or Maester Aemon. That said, I do think Janos Slynt and especially Ser Lancel Lannister are intriguing options for this deck - Lancel works really nicely with the jumping aspects, and Intimidate is always good for an aggressive deck like this. I don't think Janos is quite as good here as in a traditional deck, since I find I want my gold for other things, but maybe I'm wrong. Certainly some interesting ideas to try out. |
You have a good point about the spies, I will try a few different versions if I have the time, and see what's best. Another question: Ghosts of Harrenhal obviously has huge potential in this deck but i'm not sure which plot to cut for it. Maybe The Long Winter is the most replaceble one in the plotline but I'm not totally sure. Any ideas? |
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Ghosts, but maybe I'm wrong. Personally the 2 claim is huge, I'd be more inclined to cut Counting Coppers, especially if you're dropping the number of spies/assassins. But I probably don't flip Coppers as much as I should, so take that into account as well. You also could cut Close Call, since they kind of do similar things? |
Counting Coppers is great in this deck, I wouldn't cut that. I like Close Call too, but it might worth consideration. Time and experience will tell :) |
I went 4-1 (5th place of 18) with this version after minimal testing at the Metagame Store Championship in Budapest. Great deck, thanks :) Changing famine to long winter was a good idea, it worked out pretty well for me too. I'm also thinking about cutting the Spies (the assassins will stay for a while). For replacements my ideas are Janos Slynt, Lancel and maybe Crossroad Sellsword. What do you think?
