Hello there
inspired by @scantrell24
I've run a few games on theironthrone.net and cut the fat from the earlier 65 card deck. This is still a work in progress, but seems to perform quite nicely for now.
Plots:
- At the Gates - as someone told me "you play a deck so At the Gates is your opening plot". Here it also serves as a set up for the following City of Secrets. In case you found Gates of the Moon early feel free to pick up Great Hall or Iron Gate.
- City of Secrets - this draws for you and discards for them (most of the time).
- Confiscation - I hate Milk of the Poppy with a passion so there is a lot of attachment hate in here.
- Late Summer Feast - Economy when needed, if their reserve is low the downside is actually good for us.
- We Take Westeros! - Bullshit plot in any case and especially with that much pillage.
- Valar Morghulis - Valar M
Noteworthy Combos & Gameplan:
Even though we run some of the bombs we are trying to play a control style of play and actually going second is preferred most of the time (until Orkmont Reaver are activated for stealth).
So how do we achieve that control?
- Baelor Blacktyde - prevents any events from being played a second time (neat against SOB if you pillage their events or they discard some with City of Secrets).
- Euron Crow's Eye (Core) or Andrik the Unsmiling + Scouting Vessel - trigger that pillage effect thrice and get all their stuff or destroy everything.
- Tris Botley - Some decks can't handle him and simply lose to him staying on board, remember that even if he's milked the removed cards can't be played.
- Balon Greyjoy (KotI) + Vince - bring one of their juicy unique characters out do a challenge and then kill them with Vince.
- Queenscrown + Westwatch-by-the-Bridge - These two might seem very odd, but they can control your opponents draw pretty well. Bonus psychological warfare points if you use Queenscrown after plots are revealed to make your opponent see what topdeck they just missed out on.
- Coldhands + Valar Morghulis - If you plan to Valar next turn you can marshal Coldhands to rescue one of your bombs and remove a save from your opponent.
Cards that can be cut / are flexible:
It's always hard to adjust a deck for new cards but here are some that I consider flexible:
- We Do Not Sow
- The Hand's Judgment
- Old Grey Gull
- Jade Sea Dromond
- Gates of the Moon
- Theon Greyjoy (TFoA)
- Maester Aemon (Core)
- Maester's Chain
Cards that ruin all the fun to be had:
- characters - this deck struggles in that challenge
- Sea of Blood - boring agenda for boring people
- Citadel Archivist - if you suspect one coming up (however that would happen) try to keep a Drowned God Fanatic back in hand ...
Okay that's it, feel free to leave a comment, especially if you did some trial runs with the deck. I feel that it's a more interesting approach to Greyjoy than the usual bomb to face gameplan.
Greetings,
Toaster
If you prefer a power-grab approach: Corpse Lake + Queenscrown and King of Salt and Rock together with all the Pillage works quite well to get power fast. But that is a very different kind of deck.
